Need Some Wedding Theme Advice- LONG! (PIP)

Good morning ladies!

I still have forever until my December 22, 2012 wedding but I have been thinking recently about the overall "look" of the wedding. We are getting married at our local zoo and were going to go with the vibe of the zoo/restaurant which is tropical/adventure themed.

FI and I have been wondering if it might be fun to embrace the Christmas season (our wedding is so so close to Christmas!). The zoo does decorate for Christmas. They put up lights at our ceremony site, they have a tree in our reception site as well as window decorations.

I'd love to go the Christmas route. My only issue? I'm afraid Christmas and the zoo won't "go together".

Here is a (bad) picture of my reception site. It's the only one I've got. I'm going to the zoo this Friday and plan on taking better pictures, hopefully!

Looking at the picture, I don't think we'd be able to go the "traditional red and green" Christmas look. Maybe we could find a Christmas look that is something more rustic, or nature inspired- with lots of greenery?

Or should I just stick with my tropical theme? I don't want Christmas to look out of place even though the zoo does decorate (and I really want Christmas, lol).

Finally, I will be going to the zoo this year around Christmas time to look at their decorations, take pictures, etc. and if we do decide to do Christmas, use the zoo's decorations as a jumping point.

EDITED to add: we love our venue and leaving it is not an option. :)

Whew. If you read all this, help yourself.

Thanks girls!

I would use the zoo's decorations as a jumping point so to speak. Will they have lots of twinkle lights up? I think that would be beautiful. I'd also stay away from the typical red and green Christmas colors and maybe embrace one of those colors and combine it with white and/or gold. So red and gold or green, white, and gold, etc.. I also don't think you need to do too much since it sounds like the zoo itself will already have decorated a lot for the holiday season and you don't want to go overboard and overwhelm the eye with too many decorations. You could focus more on centerpieces, table linens, and dressing up the bar and the cake table more, etc..

I agree with PP exactly! I think its going to be such an awesome/original wedding! I love that it's at the zoo and Christmas time is always so beautiful and happy. I love it!

I agree, go and see how they decorate it for Christmas this year. The advantage you have is that you still have over a year, so you can change things. Just don't change your mind 10 different times, or you'll drive yourself crazy! Haha. Once you decide on the Christmas/rustic/tropical thing, stick with it. I think it will look awesome!

This is my issue, hah! It's great I have so much time to plan but it also makes me crazy because I change my mind fairly frequently. I will just wait until this December to make a decision.<div>

oh, I must remember to post a picture for you when I get home.  I visited a venue in SoCal in december last year when checking out venue sites, and the resort was decorated for Christmas in a tropical way since it was on the beach.  They had these crystal  palm trees as the centerpieces (sounds odd, I swear it looks better than it sounds!).  Almost like a Christmas in July theme, but it was actually Christmas time, just at a beachy place.  You could always go with a theme like that

I would use the colors that are already at the zoo, but use Christmas decorations. Instead of a traditional looking Christmas theme it could be more like a colorful Christmas. I think that could look pretty awesome!

Ditto Ash and everyone who dittoed her - wait until you visit it this Christmas!

Also, something fun we did for our December wedding was have Santa come to the reception.  A good friend of ours dressed as Santa and entered the reception to "Here Comes Santa Claus."  He had candy canes and dollar tree toys that he gave out.  Everyone LOVED it and most of our guests ended up getting photos with him.  You could do that and have a beach/tropical themed Santa, like this

Jumping in super late here!! I keep imagining Animal Kingdom at Christmas time. I always love the way they do all their decorations. Like their Christmas tree has all these wooden animals on it. I'm sure you can look up their decorations if you haven't seen it before. That might help you tie in christmas with the zoo theme already in place. Good luck!
