Confession

So I went to confession this last Saturday.  I always have the worst feeling right before I go and as I walk into the confessional. But the feeling I have when I am finished is indescribable! I always feel so amazing, and a million times better. I would say this is one of the greatest feelings in the world!  Does anyone else feel the same way?

Yes!  I always dread going to confession, and have been known to put it off, because I feel so awful about saying all these things out loud to another person, even though I know the priest will be understanding and not judgemental.  Then when I finally do it, it's like (and this is really gross) after I eat something bad and need to throw up, then finally give in and my stomach stops hurting.  It's good to get bad things out, even when you think the experience is going to be painful.  Less disgusting comparison:  It's also like when I don't want to go to the gym in the morning, then make myself do it and leave with all those nice happy endorphins.

What is the traditional format of confession? I haven't gone in years...and don't know how I'm supposed to start or what happens in it. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thank you!

This link is a bit long, but goes through many important points about confession and finishes with an examination of conscience and how-to. Hope that helps!

I have not gone to confession in ages...like, since I got confirmed. I know I need to go before the wedding but I keep putting it off. I think I need a confession buddy or something to get me to go!

Kathleen, I'm sure that any of us on CW would be happy to be your e-confession buddies.  Just let me know when you think you're going, and I'll arrange to go the same day.

This sounds strange, but I like going to confession.  There's this wonderful feeling of lightness and cleanliness afterwards.

Ditto mica, I'll go whenever if it will help someone else feel better about going...we could pray for each other beforehand, etc. I am on about a once monthly schedule right now but I would like to get up twice monthly...between all the churches near me I can find it every day, so I'm very blessed with that.

I'm strange, like Mica.  I actually like going to confession.

While I know it's really confessing to God, who already knows my sins, it's almost like a real heart to heart with a good friend who may give me some really useful help in life.

I usually go at least once a month, generally to the same priest who knows me and my life situation well.  He's bound to confidence so it's nothing he's going to chat about later ;)

I do love a good confession, too!  I agree with OOT that it's helpful to have a good confessor... I don't like getting rushed or cut off which happens a lot at my parish because the hour time window for confessions (even though they have them daily) always gets jam packed with a line of people.  I haven't gone since my honeymoon... so should probably get my butt back there soon!

I agree that a good confessor is key.  I visited a local church one time and had a random confessor.  He didn't seem "impressed" by my confession, and I felt that his words to me were dismissive.  Sorry that I don't have more impressive sins!  :P  Eh.  God heard my confession, so despite the nonchalant priest, at least my burdens were lifted.  But I will choose a different church for future confessions.

I wish I was the type who loves confession!  It's always been a huge source of anxiety for me.  It's not even about feeling embarassed about my sins, or being afraid of the priest being mean, or any of the more common things I hear.  I would definitely feel more comfortable confessing to a woman.  I'm not one to support the idea of women priests, but I sure wish sometimes that Jesus had specifically said that woman can hear confessions lol!

But I always figure that God knows it's a HUGE sacrifice for me to go through it, so I like to think He gives me a little extra help through it.  That makes me feel a little better.

Another thing I've found helpful if you're nervous about going to confession is Fr. Z's tips (click), since they will help you understand practical things that will be appreciated from the viewpoint of the priest!

I always dread going to confession, but I am pretty sure that it is just the devil trying to keep me from going.  I also feel better after I go.  I find I have better confessions if I cry too, idk but maybe I am just weird too.  I feel like crying means that I am truly sorry for my sins.  It does feel good to be free of the burdens though.  It also makes me a easier person to be around (sometimes).
