Hiring a DJ - Questions

I have been researching DJs for our wedding next September, and I think we have decided who we're probably going to go with (Neon Express). 

My question is, what steps did you ladies take before hiring your DJ?  Did you just talk over e-mail or phone and sign a contract?  Did you meet the DJ first?  Did you go see them in action at someone else's wedding?

I'm just trying to figure out what my next step should be. Laughing Thanks ladies!

    I used a DJ that my friend had at her wedding.  We did most stuff by e-mail and everything worked out great.

    I booked with Neon Express after talking over email with them and hearing great reviews. With DJs, that's all I really had to go off of and I'm comfortable with the decision

    I met with Dave from Neon Express before deciding to go with them, but based off all the positive reviews on here, I would say you could be comfortable signing a contract just based off email communication. Plus, Marc will be our DJ and not Dave, and we felt fine booking him without meeting him first.  I would say most DJs wouldn't let you go see them "in action" which I think is a good thing--would you really want strangers showing up at YOUR wedding to see your DJ? I know I wouldn't!  I'd definitely say Neon Express is a good choice! :)

    I'm using BluEyesEntertains.us. The owner, Scott, is one of my good friends and has done a ton of events.

    He has a great posting on his website of 40 questions to ask DJs.

    Thanks ladies!  I have an appointment to meet with Dave from Neon Express and we'll likely sign a contract with him at that point.  I was already pretty positive that we'd go with him, but just wasn't sure if there was more I should be doing.

    We and our wedding planner sat down with Marc from Neon Express for coffee one Sunday morning.  He drove quite a distance after being up until 3am working the night before.  Given all that, he still impressed us! We had a list of questions which he answered thoroughly and wittily even in his sleep-deprived state. It was important for us to meet with him prior and we're glad we did.

    Check out these options as well.  I would recommend meeting beforehand, the DJ is one of the most imporant factors in a wedding!  You definately want to make sure you hire a credible entertainer!  Good luck!
