DIY Invites using Cards & Pockets

Ok guys.  I am WAYYYY behind on everything (thank you, Olympic Games, for consuming every waking moment of the past week - go team USA!).  FI and I are both off tomorrow and decided we MUST get these darn invitations DONE.

We shopped around at various sites but ultimately couldn't see spending nearly $500 on paper.  My sister said she was confident she could help DIY them (I don't have a printer and she does - also, she made my bridal shower invites w/ no problem).

So, I looked on cards and pockets.com and found that cardstock could be ordered in bulk (and is very resonably priced).  So, we we're thinking of doing a 5"  by 7" pocket (http://www.cardsandpockets.com/panelpocket5x7-2.aspx?variation=14010) and then mounting a 5" by 7" invite on it and doing 3" by 5" enclosure cards.

has anyone else gone this route for inviations?  Is this going to end up being a ton of work?  Do these dimensions sound right?
I'm so hesitant to take on such a big project.  I'm not crafty and always said I would pay more to get out of DIYing anything because I didn't want to be stressed.  But now we are getting so close and I'm realizing how over budget we are.  fancy invites from weddingpaperdivas would be nice, but we'd be spending about $500 versus about $150 doing it this way.

  • If you want to go that way but are afraid to mount them, they do have that option of them doing it for you.  I'm not sure how much extra that would be.  there are also a ton of wedding invite templates on the web that you could buy the shells from like officemax or michaels and print those designs yourself.  Or have fedex office/kinkos do it.

  • We went this route, and we were very happy with how the invites turned out.  However, it was time consuming, and we started a long time ago.  In terms of mounting the invitation to the pocketfold, we used glue dots (the long rectangular ones), which you can find at Michaels or A.C. Moore, or your local craft store.  They work really well. Personally, I don't know if I would take on this project so close to the date without having anything ordered or planned out, but if you do, cards and pockets was very good, and we were happy with how everything turned out.

I used cards and pockets and had the invitations + inserts printed at 123print.com (there was a 40% off coupon a few months ago) so my total cost for 125 invitations with 2 inserts + RSVPS and envelopes with pre-printed return addresses was a little less than $300. The invites and inserts came in 5x7 so I had to cut each one to like 4.5 x 6.5 but I have a scrapbook cutter and that helped. I used double-sided tape to tape down the invite to the pocketfold. Good luck!

  • Also, for dimensions, on the website, these are the sizes you should be using:

When selecting the invitation color, make sure you choose either WHITE or CREAM not the snow white or cream puff, as the latter colors are a heavier paper that won't work well in home printers (if you are printing at home--which is what I did).
