Summer Wedding At Smith Mountain Lake, VA

I'm from Southern California and I have never been to Roanoke/ Smith Mountain Lake area in the summer. My wedding is outside in July starting at 6 pm. Everyone is warning me how hot it's going to be, including people who live in that area. Most of the west coast wedding party and guest are freaky out about the heat, humidity, and bugs. Is it really that bad? If it is, how can I make my guest more comfortable. Any advice would be helpful. Thank you so much!I

I worked at a retreat at SML last summer. It can get pretty humid during the day, and the bugs are iffy at night. Of course, part of the reason I was so sweaty and gross was that I was essentially functioning as a camp counselor, and quite literally running around all day.

If your wedding is *starting* at 6 PM, I don't think it'll be that bad. It cools off a lot in the VA mountains after the sun goes down--we're talking a good 15-20 degree difference. Use citronella candles as part of your decor for the wedding and reception, if they're outside. They smell nice and keep most bugs away.

If you want to make guests comfortable, have paper fans as favors, and leave them out on the chairs at the ceremony. But seriously, the heat will not be a factor once the sun goes down.

This all being said, make sure you have a thunderstorm plan. The Blue Ridge region of VA is notorious for sudden thunderstorms, even when two minutes ago there was a blue, cloudless sky. Fortunately, they usually only last 30 minutes, so if you have to run for cover, all is not lost.

Congrats! I love living out here, and the scenery will be brilliant for your photos. I hope all of this helps.
