HATE MY DRESS

UGHHHHHH I don't know what to do.....I ordered my dress 9 months ago, after trying on 150+ dresses.  I liked it then.  A few months after, probably still 6 months ago, I began to dislike the dress.  I tried it on a few times, and still didn't like it.  I went for a fitting 3 weeks ago and the dress was okay, there were just a bunch of changes I wanted.  I went today for a second fitting, and I am freaking out!  I hate it!  I hate the pleating on the bottom of the dress, I hate the way the bustle looks, I hate the way the top fits....it's just all wrong.  I feel so stupid, because I should have known 6 months ago when I began feeling this way.  I think I might end up buying another dress, which SUPER sucks because then all that money went to waste.  I don't know what to do!!!!!! Cry

Re: HATE MY DRESS

  • Maybe you could look for another one and buy that. There are tons of places to resell a wedding dress or donate it and write it off on your taxes. You might not get your money back immediately but in the end you might come out ok. I'm sorry you feel that way about your dress, I'm not completely head over heels for mine and wish I would have looked longer but I do like it, I think it's more because my fiance basically always goes shopping for all my clothes with me and is a good judge of whether something looks good. So I think that he'll really like the dress and it is very pretty. Good luck and I'm sorry that you are in this situation :(
  • i am sorry you are in this situation. I kind of feel nervous about my dress as well. Tonight is my first fitting and the last time i was there they didint seem to make me feel confident they could fix the way the top fit...at any rate. I'd try looking at an off the rack kind of place like David's

Is your dress at home.? Can it be altered to your liking. A dress could be really restyled.
They could TAKE out the pleats at the bottom you dislike etc.

  • Search for one off the rack. I lost 3 sizes between when I purchased my gown, and went for my first fitting. Went back for the 2nd fitting after all of the alterations, and they couldn't make it work and look right. I too, wasn't sure on the dress.

If you don't like it, you are going to feel that way the whole day. You don't want to be uncomfortable or later on wishing you would've trusted your gut. See what you can find off the rack, and go from there.

I'm sort of having the same issue as you i2012do and OP.  I actually do like my dress... but I don't think I ever fell in LOVE with it.  Problem is, I can't think of anything I would like more.  I purchased a trumpet style gown, although I also liked some ball gown styles... sometimes I regret it, but I still don't think ball gowns are "right" for me.

Anyway, my dress is really simple, which sometimes bothers me but I thought I could make up for it by making sure the fit is absolutely perfect.  I just had my first fitting on Tuesday.  We're taking it in in a few places and adding some crinoline, plus a bustle, but not doing much on top of that--I thought about lowering the back a bit but the alterations woman said that she'd have to take the whole dress apart to do that.  It doesn't lay perfectly flat in the front, right under the boobs, because of the inner corset/boning, and she basically told me it will never lay flat (again, unless she took it all apart).  She also said that while the dress will look really nice on me, it won't show off my figure as good as it could.  While I appreciate her honesty, it made me sad to hear.  On the other hand, it's not all THAT bad, and she told me no one will notice but me.  I think it will look better once other alterations have been made... but still, it's so disheartening.  Alterations ended up costing a lot more than I expected too...

On the flip side, she's a very reputable dressmaker (does custom dressmaking and even restored Princess Grace Kelly's veil a few years back!) and I know the work she does will be awesome.  I'm just a little dejected that I don't think my dress will have that absolutely perfect fit.  I'm picking it up in a couple weeks and that's it.  I'm worried that my dress will be too big if I lose weight in the month before the wedding, but if I went in for more alterations it would cost even more money that I just can't spend.

Deep down I know I'm going to look awesome on my wedding day--with the veil, jewelry, hair, makeup.... I just wish I was more SURE of it.  I can't afford to get another dress now... so I'll work with what I got!  My dress really is beautiful, too... I just can't help second guessing.  I'm sure that's the case for you, too.

  • I know EXACTLY how you feel OP. I thought about my dress and realized I liked my dress but I was IN love with my dress. I talked with FI about and got his opinions on whether I was crazy or if I should go see what is out there and make a decision from there. He supported me in going to a little bridal salon down the street to look.

I walked in and pulled some dresses and the owner had me put my old dress on and than I put on a new one I had pulled. The customers in the store said the second dress (new one) I had tried one was the one I should wear not realizing I owned the first one. That just reaffirmed that I made the right choice by going to a salon just to see. I have never got that, oh I am a bride and I look amazing feeling, and with the new dress I did. I just knew,

The best part? They let me have the sample and because of it being a sample, I got all my alterations free. If you really feel like you don't want to wear your current dress, I would suggest looking and seeing if there is something else out there that makes you feel like you want to feel and see if you can get a deal. You should be able to find one now and get alterations done ASAP. My alterations place only needs 3 weeks or so from the first fitting so it is possible. Either way best of luck in whatever you decide!
  • If you're really squeezed for funds, but truly unhappy, it's worth a scroll through Craigslist ads.  I always see SO many dresses on there and it seems that at least 50% are dresses "in style" and not hideous 80s dresses!  At least you wouldn't feel guilty about spending more $$ since most dresses on there are pretty cheap.
