How much is your registry worth?

So I was updating my registry over the weekend.  When I was done, I decided to see how much it would cost to buy everything on the registry's (Macy's, BBB, and some misc. items on GiftRegistry.360) at full price.  I know (or I hope) most people won't pay full price and will use coupons or take advantage of sales (especially at Macy's), but I wanted to get an idea.  I was blown away by the final number, well over $10,000 with most items <$100 each.  Ouch...

I know the registry is just a guideline and I don't expect any gifts, let alone everything on there, but I was really startled by the number.  It made me feel greedy and ridiculous.

Anyone else added up the cost/value of your registry?  Is my registry way out of line?  Should I cut some stuff?  We are inviting about 300 people and expecting about 230 so I added a lot of stuff so people would have a good variety of items and price points from which to pick.

Re: How much is your registry worth?

  • No, I think it's good to have a lot of items from different price points to give people options. I haven't looked into our total costs though. We are actually going to a registry even at BBB on Thursday!

  • We have a very small registry which is only about $1200 total.  It's only china, flatware, and glasses.

  • My invited guest count is 250+ so we registered for a lot of stuff. I felt greedy too but the lady that walked us through it said that even if you register for everything you won't get everything but it's nice to give people options.

I think the thing that I loved about registering at BBB was that after the HM if there is stuff that didn't get purchased that we really want they have a 10% off thing where you can go in and get whatever you want that's left. Thought that was pretty cool.

  • We still have to do our Target registry, and finish Menards and BBB.  The consultant at BBB told us a good guideline was to register for 2 items per guest to give them variety, as well as pick a wide range of prices.  Once we finish, I'm betting we'll be well over $5000, maybe even closer to $7500.  We have a couple big ticket items that we aren't really expecting to get, unless several people chip in on it together  (ie: kegerator).
  • I registered this past weekend and I was told for my guest list of 200 plus my shower guest list of 50 that I should register for 300 items and will a wide price range as some will do group gifts etc.  I know my moms family gives one gift as a group which is nice for the big ticket item you may need or want.  I have had lots of compliments with my registry because we registered for a honeymoon registry as well as the typical gifts.  I thought that people would frown on that and it is the opposite response.  My mom has a had many comments on the honeymoon and it is only been 3days since I updated it on my website.

I also felt guilty registering for items as I am not one to ask for anything if I get it I get it but being as we will be flying to our shower, and weddings we needed to register and fall outside the typical and request gift cards with a picture of what they would like a us to purchase off our registry.  The givers can also buy it and ask that we pick it up at the store we registered at.

Anyways it was not as stressful as I thought but I should tally the totals.
