Event home help!

I need some help with event home information. We are planning on a May 2013 wedding and are hoping to rent 1 main house for the bridal party and close family and a 2nd home (which does not have to be oceanfront, but at least close by to the main house). We would like the main house to be pet friendly as well.

Did anyone do anything similar to this? And if so, which homes did you rent? It's a daunting task trying to sort through all of these rental companies, different homes, etc. Some of them list prices, others you have to call.. We've been at this for weeks and still have not made a decision. We are hoping to keep the combined price of both homes below $10,000. For the main house we will need something that sleeps about 20 people. The guest house if it slept even 10 I think that would be fine. But the more, the better.

Some homes we have considered:
"The Stars #403" Sun Realty
Boardwalk - KD 22 or 23 (I forget which) Village Realty

Seaside Vacations:
Big Mama's 0703
Big Daddy's 0704
La Buena Vida (The Good Life) 0706
Lazy Lizard 0705

Just to give you an idea of what we have been looking at. But if anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to any and all!! We are thinking we will have about 35-40 guests.

Thanks!
Maura

Re: Event home help!

  • I need some clarification so I give you the correct info:

You are looking for a main event home b/c this is where the ceremony & reception will be held, correct?

The 2nd house, does not have to be an event home, correct?

Sorry, yes that's correct. Main house for wedding and reception. 2nd home does not have to be an event home, will just be used for guests.

I have seen some of those in person and personally, I like The Stars OR Boardwalk the best!

Keep in mind that it may be difficult to get a 2nd house that is really close to the main house, so don't really stress yourself out over it too much.  My H and I got our own house for the week and it was about 5 miles from the main house and only took about 5 minutes to get there.

Are you going down anytime soon?  Maybe you can arrange a sneak peek at some of these houses one day.

P.S.  I had pre-reserved Big Mama's b/c I fell in love with the house and it was perfect to have a tent in the grassy area.....until the owner raised the rent by $2,000 in October (that is when all of the new rates go out) and I was devastated!!  They say things happen for a reason and it was definitely true in this case--I found 108 Budleigh and ended up having 96 guests, so Big Mama's wouldn't have worked out in the long run anyways.

  • Those are the ones I like the best, too! The stars has 12 bedrooms I think, 10 of which are master bedrooms and the majority of people would have a King/Queen bed. It's just that we have family coming from Europe so we want to make sure they have a home to stay in, as opposed to them staying in a hotel, but the prices really start to add up when you include the event fees, security depot, etc. Frustrating!

Is everyone staying in the house splitting the costs?  If so, I would NOT include the event fee as part of their portion for the week.  You and FI or either your parents should solely be the ones to cover the event fee and the deposit will come back to you :)

  • Here is a home we rented in 2010 when we celebrated my parents 50th wedding anniversary! It might work for you as a guest house! There were 17 of us in the house...plenty of room!

A Whale's Head Inn, oceanfront, South Nags Head. Listed with Stan White Realty--SN785.

PS...I am a mother of the bride. My daughter just got married on June 24th.
  • We rented Getrude's Breakaway and had the reception there. There are several houses that were also rented by our family on the same street including Belle of the South, R-IDyll, and Beach Dream Inn. Beach Realty NC also has several houses on the same street/in the same subdivision. These houses are all up in Corolla.
  • Fiance and I looked at Gertrude's Breakaway - it's a BEAUTIFUL house. It's just a few yards from the beach (it's not DIRECTLY on the ocean) and it has a side yard perfect for a tent. Look into that house if you can.

  • What area are you looking in? I'm guessing Kitty Hawk, KDH, etc., If you were looking in the Duck/Corolla area (that's where we've always stayed), you could easily find houses that were within the same development. We are renting a house in Sea Pines, and most of our friends are staying in Four Seaons, it's like a 5 minute walk from one house to the other, so it should work out good. Plus we have a golf cart (random, I know), so who knows how we'll end up using that!

  • I thought that's how you were getting to the Sanderling on Sept 7th, KSJ? :-)

  • Oh, the Saltaire in Duck is a great home to host the wedding reception at - there is a beach access at the end of the street (long walk, but I believe Saltaire has the rights to the entrance there) and Ron the owner has the information for the houses across the street.  He said a lot of people who rent his event home have family/friends stay at the houses across the street.  Even better news is that Ron does all the set-up and coordinating of tent rental, etc. for you.

I think he has other homes too not in Duck by down in Kitty Hawk if its not your cup of tea.

  • I just thought about this, whichever home you choose to rent, call ahead and ask them what homes they have in their inventory that include your criteria and that are close to the main home.  The rental company will be able to find them for you A LOT easier since they know their homes so well.  So, if you decide on The Stars, call them and ask what homes are nearby and go from there.

  • We're renting Lindenwood from Brindley Beach. It's oceanfront in Corolla. There are a TON of houses (alot from Twiddy) in the neighborhood (Ocean Hill).  My bridesmaids are renting a house for the week 3 houses down from us, our groomsmen are renting another house on the street right behind us, and 3 or 4 other houses are being rented for the week by my family members.

They all are literaly within a 5 minute walk.  On the Twiddy website you can actually search by neighborhood, so this helped me alot in recommending houses for our guests that are in the same neighborhood. Good luck!
