Cake/Cupcake Debate

Need some thoughts and opinions on this one. Part of me really wants cupcakes. I think the idea is great. I've only been to one wedding that had cupcakes and it was amazing. But the traditionalist in me really wants the cake. Thoughts? Opinions? Reasons to go with one over the other?

Re: Cake/Cupcake Debate

  • There's no reason you can't do both; a small traditional cake on top of a cupcake tower of cascading lengths would work. Not sure if it work with your theme but that's how I would go...

We had both - 10 dozen cupcakes and a small cutting cake for H and me to cut in photos.  One reason we did cupcakes over cake for the guests is because our venue charged a $2.50 cake cutting fee for each piece of cake.  This way guests just came up and got their own damn cupcake.  BAM - we just saved $250.00.

There were a lot of desserts included in the dinner buffet too, so we had lot of cupcakes left over, which we served at the gift opening the next day.  We froze most of our cutting cake for our aniversary.

  • We're doing both.
We are having a cake, larger than we planned (100pieces) and then doing cupcakes.

I say do both, you get your cupcakes and stick with tradition!

  • Agree with PPs.  You can have a small cutting cake and a bunch of cupcakes. DH and I had cupcakes only and don't regret it.  We saved on the cutting fee (yeah!) and felt cupcakes fit us better - they were the first thing I baked for DH when we started dating.

  • I personally think that cupcakes are kind of trendy, and I wanted the traditional cake.
I feel like cake pops are becoming the new cupcakes, too.

Either way if you go with what you want, you will be happy, and your guests will be grateful for anything :)
  • We are doing both... A smaller cake on top just to hold our cake topper and for our 1 year anniversary, and cupcakes for all our guests...  We are skipping the whole "Cake Cutting" thing...
  • ditto PPs. we are doing cupcakes with a small cake for us to cut.
  • Well, it looks like our budget has decided our great debate. The cake is included with our reception package but it would cost a lot more to get cupcakes. My fiance and I are both okay with the traditional cake (the cupcake idea was more to prevent cake cutting fees, which there aren't any at our reception venue) so we're going to go with that. Thanks for all the suggestions!
