Cake?

I got into cake decorating a year or so ago, and up until now I've been going back and forth on whether or not I should do my own cake. I'm trying to DIY as much as possible, mostly because I'm a control freak and I'm very particular about things, but also to keep the budget under control. Although it seems a shame to spend hundreds of dollars on something I can do myself, I've finally decided that baking a multi-tier cake a day or two before my wedding is a horrible idea and would be entirely too stressful. So now I'm looking for an affordable bakery in the Syracuse area. So far, everywhere I've looked starts at $4/pp and goes up from there.....has anyone found anything better out there?

Not I. My cake is 4 tiered fondant and everyone want 6pp because of the fondant. One of my cousins relatives does cakes as a side hobby so Im meeting with her this week to see the work shes done and what kind of pricing she can give me..

I'm not doing a traditional cake - I'm doing a "cupcake cake" and a dessert buffet, but we're going with Sweet Endings Bakeshop in Jamesville. They do wedding cakes too. Our cupcakes and dessert buffet are very reasonably priced so I'm betting the cakes are, too. Check them out, they're great!

My cake was waaay under $4/pp but the bakery is in Geneva.  I'm not sure if she would travel to Syracuse and for what price, but it might be worth checking into...
Club 86 Bagels and Cakes Lori Legott.  Several of the girls on here have used her... her cakes are amazingly delicious and the best prices you will find anywhere, hands down.

Sweet Endings bakeshop is the place that quoted me about 6pp. My total price for my cake which is 3 tired fondant with about 14 sugar flowers was $500.

Monica, I saw your review for Club 86 but I figured it'd be too far away. Guess it can't hurt to ask. The dessert buffet sounds nice, I was thinking of maybe doing some mini tartlets and pies in addition to the traditional cake. KTina...$6pp is a lot! I know fondant is an additional cost, and although I make all my cakes with fondant I'll probably go for a basic buttercream. I love the look of fondant but I have seen so many people picking it off of my cakes because they don't like the taste. Most weddings I've been to, nobody even notices the cake is out because they're too busy partying...which is what I'm aiming for. Cake and flowers, the two things I really don't care to spend money on. I'll keep looking....thanks guys!

Check on The Gingersnap bakery in Phoenix.  I just had a tasting there a last week.  They were delicious and reasonablely priced.

I'd give Lori a shout and just ask... it can't hurt.  If she won't travel all the way out here, or if her travel fee is too high... then you won't have wasted the trip to see her for a tasting.  If hshe'll travel and her fee is ok... then it's definitely worth a trip to taste... plus you'll be in wine country... so... conveniently... you can do a wine tour while you're there...  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />
