Good Morning

I'm protecting my bagel from the cat and trying to type at the same time.

Hoping alois has a wonderful wedding day!

I'm making pulled pork in the crockpot today.  Many recipes call for root beer - anyone know why?  I found a simple one on allrecipes.com.  3 ingredients:  the pork, the root beer and BBQ sauce at the end.  I can manage.

What's shaking for your weekends?

Re: Good Morning

  • Morning all! We are going out with some of FI work friends tonight. I have a phone interview at 7 am Monday morning for a temporary job in the spring covering for a dr on maternity leave. I just need to make sure my brain is awake that early.

  • Happy wedding day, A-Lo!

I think it's the sugar, Marrin.  Same with the Dr Pepper recipe.  I've heard the diet variety doesn't work, so it must be the sugar.  I haven't tried it, but I've heard it's fantastic.

I'm not sure what we're doing today, other than grilling some steaks DH got at Costco yesterday.  It's cold and icky all weekend, but we will probably hike anyway.  DH leaves tomorrow for a conference, so I'll have a few nights to starfish the bed and watch movies that he hates.  I'll admit that I don't mind him being gone once in a while for a few days.

  • Les, sugar is the only thing I can think of as well.  That's why I didn't get diet RB.
  • I've made that before!  I catered a party for 60 people, and they all loved it!  I think the root beer works so well because it's got enough acid/carbonation to tenderize the meat while it cooks, and cut through the fattiness, so for me it made cheaper pieces of meat seem better than they were.  The sugariness kind of carmelizes the meat a little.  And the spice blend in root beer complements pork well.  So I think that's why a lot of recipes call for root beer, because it does all the same things a fancy, 36 ingredient marinade would, but it's $2 and 1 step.

I am waiting for my best friend to pick me up then we are going to Portland!  Hurray!  Shopping!
  • I want some new sweaters too, but I hate shopping.  Maybe I'll go online and look around.

    [QUOTE]I like this one, but it's $70. A little too pricey for me. <a href="http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?productId=1340_6005_131&catId=cat1410002" rel="nofollow">http://www.ae.com/web/browse/product.jsp?productId=1340_6005_131&catId=cat1410002</a>

Love that!  It's a little expensive for me too, but I worked at least 15 hrs of overtime every week last month, and got paid on Monday so I may end up splurging a little.  Right now, because of weight loss and clothes just plain wearing out, I have one pair of jeans. I also wear jeans to work almost every day, so this does not work.  I am washing my pants 3 times a week, which just means they are wearing out too.

And, great thing about shopping with this friend is A) We have been friends since we were 5, so we can shop for each other just as easily as ourselves so some of my favorite things she has found for me, and B)  We make a similar amount of money, so we tend to have the same budget/expectations of how much is reasonable to spend.

I hate going shopping with someone and they are all ready to go spend $300 on a pair of jeans, when you normally spend $30.
Note:It doesn't make me hate the person, but more the fact that even though I absolutely love my job, I'll never make that much money.
  • I'm so sick of this excess weight.  Luckily I wear scrubs every day for work so that takes much of the what-to-wear decision making out of my hands.  But it seems that I am now gravitating toward yoga pants and baggy sweaters and I hate that I have grown complacent about it.  I have all these unresolved auto-immune issues that are being worked on and now thyroid has decided to quit working at an acceptable level.  I know...excuses, excuses.
  • Meh, I could work a little harder on eating better, Edie.
  • I think "Betty" is a term coined in WWII (not that I'm old enough to remember!).
  • Morning.

I'm doing eggs benedict for breakfast shortly because my H begged.  I feel the need to give in to whatever he wants since I went a little Christmas-happy at Menards last night.  I went there looking for a replacement string of lights since the weather looks like I might need to do my outdoor lights soon.  i came home with a 4 1/2 ft tree, a 3 ft white tree, tree skirts, and ornaments.  *sigh*  So added to the real tree we will have, the 6 1/2 ft artificial, and the little 3ft tree..  We'll be a 5-tree house this holiday.
  • VS doesn't have their sweaters in-store (at least not at any store I've ever been to).  I have bought several online for myself and my daughters, and haven't been disappointed.

I want a smaller tree this year.  We have a gigantic 7.5 foot tree that really looks great when it's fluffed properly.  It has pinecones and everything, and can look real when it's decorated.  But - it's way too large for the room.  I bought it when I lived in a different house, with a ballroom for a living room.  I hate that it takes up half of my current crappy living room.  I will probably shop this weekend for a 3-4 footer that I can put on a table.

    5 trees??  You're hardcore, Anna  8-)

  • Oh Anna, just take pics of your trees and I will download them and hang them up in various parts of my house and say, "Just pretend these are here......."  We have no company for the hols and we are not going away this year, so the little fiberoptic tree will come out for a couple of weeks.  I used to love to decorate for Christmas as did my son when he was younger.  But now I can't be arsed.  I enjoy the hols and the setup, but I hate the teardown.  All you holiday decorators out there - go for it!
  • Anna, you could hire yourself out as a holiday decorator.  Do the set up and the teardown.  I would actually pay money for that service.

Jealous!  We're going away for Christmas this year (my parents, FI and I, and my Bro and his GF) so we're not doing any decorating.  I'm excited to travel, but it will be the first Christmas my bro and I have ever (25 years) not spent at home with all of our extended family.  I'm a little sad about not continuing the tradition, but I'm starting to accept that new things can be good things.

It is a good thing; just takes time to get used to.  When my parents retired to FL that was the start of new holiday traditions for xH and our family.  We then alternated years of being down there for Christmas and when not there, we hosted a huge dinner at our house for his family.  Then the marriage broke up and along with the marriage, the whole in-law relationships fell apart too.  Son moved out on his own as did I so I ended up just going down to parents for Christmas.  Then along came H and new traditions (which is kind of like having <strong>no</strong> traditions because he's not all that into holidays, but he goes along to get along).  So it's all a matter of rolling with it dtb.  In my experience anyway.  You and FI will start your own traditions along the way :)
  • Morning ladies!

We slept in till 10. I'm sick and my boss sent me home early yesterday. Head cold, ugh!

H has to fix the stairs on the deck and I plan on doing nothing today.

    Have a great day ladies!

  • Well, it's good afternoon for me.

Groceries bought and put away, laundry ready to be folded and other chores done.

I love VS clothes, and it never seems to wear out. I've gotten used to the idea of ordering it all online, and I've found that their clothes are true to size, so it isn't a crap shoot! I did order pants too short once, but that's not a huge deal. They fit great everywhere else, and I'm not super tall, I just wear them with flats and mentally promise myself to cut them off and turn them into capris or bermudas.
