Is your cake pearlized?

ETA: My guests and I thank you for informing me that this is fondant. Had no idea. That means my cake is convered in fondant which is kind gross lol; I will change it to non-shiny buttercream (which looks better anyway) when I go in to give them the final count :)

Yes, I know we talked about food months ago, but I can't find a topic on this on TK.

Are you getting your cake pearlized? My parents insisted it would look better this way, but I'm having second thoughts. I'm not liking how some of the cakes I'm seeing like this look.

For ppl who don't know what I'm talking about, the "shiny" icing on this cake is pearlized: http://palermobakery.com/wedding-cakes/6-tier-draped-elegance-wedding-cakewc-10034

Re: Is your cake pearlized?

  • We're are not because of the design of our cake is a mountain-scape (in siggy below).

I think it all depends on the design of your cake.

  • We are doing pleated buttercream with some decorations... so no- though it is really pretty and could be lovely and neat at a formal type wedding.

I think it would be nice but not necessary. So if you like it enjoy and if you don't it's not required ;-)
  • We are having buttercream on our main cake, but the groom's cake has fondant.

I didn't think it was only fondant? I thought my cake had regular icing...

But y'all answered my question, it's not necessary. I don't think I like it, so I'm taking it off :)

Hmm. Well, I guess that means my cake is completely covered in fondant right now. UGH!

That's it - I'm not asking my parents any more wedding related questions lol

  • Nope, just smooth buttercream for me. :)

  • We're having buttercream and a "shimmer".  Although I'm not really sure we need the shimmer but I'll just leave it anyway.

  • We were until we had the tasting. Here they call it spun sugar over the fondant. It was soooo nasty. So we are going to just do regular Buttercream and its cheaper anyway

  • we're having fondant over top of the buttercream (easier to decorate and more "durable"). Plus, our cake is artificial except for the top layer for me and FI, so it doesn't really matter if it has fondant (if people were eating it, i'd be hesitant to use fondant because I don't really know anyone who likes it and it just gets picked off..) Never heard of the shiny/pearlized fondant :S

  • Goodness... thank you all for responding. I would have been very upset on my wedding night tasting a mouthful of fondant LOL

  • Ours will have a shimmer but the venue said it was just a spray and the cake lady does it for all of the cakes.
