VENUE... BARGAINING????

Okay... I feel like such a Slowsky. I will be putting a deposit on my venue for the reception this coming Friday ( with the help of my parents).  Ive read all through TK about bargaining and talking down the price.  HOW DO YOU DO THAT? What do you ask?
Am I like asking for the pp price itself to be reduced or something?  It seems like a weird question to ask and I was a bit nervous about asking it but I felt like if I dont Ill probably go crazy and overpay. I know with this economy venues are happy to get all the business they can.

Thank you for any and all suggestions. I really do appreciate it.

I just went through this last week. We asked if packages were customizeable at all, and they were, so we asked what we could do to lower the pp price. We went through the package line by line and ended up taking out a thing or two we didn't feel were necessary. For example at my place the cocktail hour includes cheese display, meat display, & 5 hor dourves. Just taking out the meat display saved us $10pp, and we could remove the cheese and a few hor dourves if we want to as well. We were also able to add a cheaper cut of beef for the same price as the chicken ($15pp savings), and got valet service for $12 per car instead of $16 (miami beach). Don't forget to ask about under 21's discount, children's discount, and vendor meals discount. Make sure that everything you talk about, gets put into the contract, and read it very carefully!

Don't be afraid to ask questions, the worst they can do is say no!

I agree with the above post. We did the same... we were able to take a more expensive package and lower it by taking out unnecessary details.

Honestly, what worked for me was pretending that I was going to leave.  Whenever I'd get a price pp, I'd be all pensive and look at my fiancé and say, "So and so offered us a little less than this, right?" as if though it were a private discussion.  Then I'd tell the manager that we really appreciated his help, but the deal offered was over budget. In about 90% of cases, they automatically start asking questions, like what your budget is, and giving suggestions for lowering the cost, and throwing in freebies. One vendor who originally gave me a price of $58 pp (one of those all-inclusive packages), ended up settling for $40 pp.  (I didn't go with this vendor as I later chose a different wedding style.) I also talked another vendor down from $1000 to $500 simply by telling him the name of the other vendor who offered me a better deal and letting him know what the deal was.  I know this can be tricky and a bit embarrassing but girl, I learned a lot from this experience.  I'd never haggled before in my life...this wedding taught me a huge lesson.

jcaruncho2010 where are you getting married at?  My fiance and I are also looking for a venue but everything is so expensive.  We are located in palm beach county.  The only place that we found was a decent price was at signature grand which was $60 a person but it also almost a hour from where we live.
