Dress fitting?

Hi I had one dress fitting already but my seamstress said she wasn't goin to cut the hem till after the second dress fitting. I can only go for my fittings on a Wednesday because I didn't purchase my dress there. So I'm worried that I won't have enough time for all the alterations! Wondering if anyone else had the seamstress not cut the dress till the second fitting? And how many fitting did you amazing ladies have before th dress was aisle ready?

Re: Dress fitting?

  • I had a total of 3 fittings.  The first one she took my measurements in the dress and started the hem but because it was so big she did the same thing as yours is doing.  The second one it was all pinned and I basically tried it on and we did some tweakings.  The third I picked it up and tried it on and it fit beautifully.  It took 2 weeks exactly between 1st and 3rd fittings so you should have enough time depending on your date.

How soon is your wedding?  If it's less than 2 weeks you might have a problem but for the most part all alterations can be done in 2 weeks by a good seamstress.

ETA I agree with PP with how long it took and how they do things!

  • I have already had two fittings and my final fitting is on Saturday. However, my dress ended up being the absolute perfect length (which is a good thing, since I have a "bubble train" which is impossible to hem), so I don't know anything about cutting and hemming!!

At my first fitting, she pinned where I wanted my sweetheart neckline cut and we worked on the bustle. At the second we made sure the bustle and neckline were right, and worked with the extra fabric that we bought on putting together a one-shoulder strap. My final fitting is just to make sure the shoulder strap looks right and fits well. I think you should be OK time wise - my seamstress is really fast, and surely yours is too!
  • My first fitting - she measured for the corset and the hem - - 2nd fitting she had cut the train off like I had requested and cut fabric from the bottom but it wasnt hemmed.  The corset was in but did not have the panel put in behind the laces yet and the top was taken in though.  I am going to be trying it on again next Monday (16th) and everything should be done.

Same here. You can ask for the dress to be completed in a shorter amount of time if you are pressed for time. My first fitting was 6 weeks before my wedding, 2nd fitting was 3 weeks before, and my final fitting/pickup is one week before my wedding.
  • First fitting she pinned the hem and pinned the bodice and bust where she was taking it in, and pinned the bustle. Second fitting the hem was only basted, but the bodice was sewn. Final fitting everything was done and the dress was steamed. It is in my closet now and I can't believe there is a wedding dress in my closet! Time between 2nd and 3rd fitting was only a week.
  • The second fitting she cut the dress and figured out the bustle. The third and last will just be to make sure everything fits and to figure out the bustle.

  • 1st fitting she cut the hem and pinned the buslte. Plus pinned the top a little. Second fitting it was basically done but I had a third so my BM's could learn how tie my corset and do my bustle. Then she found one stich she wanted to do on the front of the skirt to hold one of the folds. Plus it needs to be steamed so I'll pick it up in a few days.

  • Just had my second fitting this afternoon and she cut my tulle while I wore it, and pinned what she has to sew. If it helps, my wedding is Saturday! Final fitting is Thursday. I was crunched for time though since I just flew into Indiana this weekend. She will be doing most of the work in the next two days. All she had really done in the last month was part of the bustle. I totally trust her to finish it though...plus she will be at the wedding, so even offered to bustle it for me :-)

  • Ok thanks for letting me know how the fittings went. My date is July 28th. I'm getting nervous about the dress not fitting rite. I'm from Vancouver Canada and my dress is about 1.5 hrs away in the USA. Having only Wednesday available to me for fitting has been stressful.
