Oh, my family...

I was just chatting online with my aunt.

Aunt: Do you know how to cook?
Me: Yes.  Why?
Aunt: Because you're getting married.

Seriously?  What is this, 1950?  Why don't I just do it barefoot and pregnant while I'm at it (actually, I wouldn't mind this someday soon, now that I think about it, lol).  I would sure hope I know how to cook considering I've been living on my own for 6 years (and cooked and cleaned when I lived at home).  I told my mom, and she said I should ask her if she knows how to clean yet, because apparently my uncle had to SHOW her when they got married!

I'm so glad that my FI and I share equally in keeping the house clean, cooking, and paying the bills.  I just have to say that I love him with my whole heart, and I can't wait to marry him in 10 DAYS!

Re: Oh, my family...

  • I know what you mean! Seems like his family asks a lot about if I can cook, etc. I cook but acutally FI cooks more than me, he is better at it and enjoys it more! I do other things...why does my cooking ability have to be a major topic of conversation.

Jeez, I know what you mean! FI and I are very 21st century, not only did we both hyphenate our last names, but he does all of the cooking. I do all of the cleaning and laundry, but while my friends think it's normal, others think it's weird. When we have kids we both plan to be active parents and parent equally. While there is nothing wrong with being a 1950's housewife, it is wrong to assume or judge a couple for how they handle their chores.

My sentiments exactly, except worded better. :)
  • If someone said this to me I would have to refrain from slapping them. I hate when people do stuff like that haha. FI and I also evenly split housework and cooking!

FI's mom thinks that I can't cook but I can, I just don't like too, so whenever I do make something extra yummy she always acts surprised and gives me some weird, 'Since when can you cook?' type comment. It's just annoying since she's a SAHM, thats what she does cooks, cleans, takes care of the grand kids which is completely fine for her. I would go insane sitting at home all day so I put my career first and housework second because that is what I like!

  • People asked me too! I don't get it! I cooke really well. I have never heard DH complain, well, ok maybe, but they were new ideas and it was constructive. Like, my cheesesteaks needed more sale. :) I am not too much for cleaning but DH helps out A LOT! And my mom helped me scrub it down a few days before the wedding and his mom cleaned the whole time she was in town, so, we are good.
  • I've never understood the whole "can you cook?" line. I've been asked that before too. There are so many cookbooks and websites for recipes... If you can read, you can cook.

    <div>Bahaha! This, exactly! </div>
  • I've been asked this a lot. I am by no means the best cook, but I'm good at enough that we won't go hungry. FI, IMO, has more potential at cooking than I do (except with veggies - I helpl him with that), so he'll probably take the lead with this. I handle pretty much all of the cleaning.

But I agree, I don't understand why ppl ask this question. My domestic skills are none of their business.

Ha! For our first christmas together, 2 of my Fi's aunts gave me each a cook book as a xmas gift! I've been living on my own for years and also cooked for Fi when we started dating, etc... but his 2 aunts gave me cook books for xmas? Oh pleeeeease... I was definitely annoyed by that gesture...but didnt say anything... both books are still wrapped on the shelf. Haha

  • I've gotten the cooking one a bit but my favorite has been older people who bring their kids to the library where I'm part of the administrative staff, manage a staff of 5 employees, run the children's department entirely on my own, and still do a kick-ass storytime every single week. I went to graduate school to do this and I LOVE my job. And they've been asking, 'now, are you going to quit when you get married? We'd really love it if you stayed here and kept working, at least until you have a baby...."

Seriously, is this 1950? I make more than FI does and I work my butt off in my chosen career field. And we couldn't pay our rent if I didn't work!

I just respond cheerfully, 'Of course I'm staying! I'd miss the kids way too much if I left. I love my job!"
