Stone in E-ring Always Coming Loose

Hi ladies!

I am wondering if any of you have a similar issue with your ring.

My ring is a three stone oval cut ring. The three stones are held in place with a 4 prong setting. Prior to FI purchasing the ring, I suggested a 6 prong setting because I have friends and family members with 4 prong settings who have lost stones. However, FI picked the oval cut and I really do love the ring.

We were engaged in December and twice since then the stones have come loose. 3 weeks ago they were loose and we took it back to the jeweler to have it tightened. Just this morning, I hear the stone rattling some more.

The jeweler is a reputable jeweler, one that his family has used for 20+ years without any issues.

Does this just come with the territory of having a 4 prong setting? I talked to a friend who has a princess cut diamond with a 4 prong setting and she has it regularly tightened every 3 months. Do any of you do this? Suggestions?

I'm not not sure what to do.... other than take it back for a second time in a month, and get it tightened.

I have a 4 prong setting and the stone has never come loose. I have a solitare with diamonds on semi-mount, but have had the ring since Dec. 2009 and never had a problem with it. From my standpoint, it's not common, but other girls may have different experiences.

you definitely need to talk to your jeweler.......before you lose the stone. I have 4 prongs and it never comes loose, and I wear it for sports. I'd check back with them!

my suggestion: get ring insurance and go talk to your jeweler. it they're setting it properly i dont think you should be having that issue

I had that issue with my 3 stone princess cut ering. We took it in and they tightened it and added platinum to the prongs and it hasn't happened since.

I am a bench jeweler and I highly suggest a six prong setting. It provides a greater amount of security to keep your stone in place. If that is not possible, I suggest insurance or possibly seeing if your jewelry could take the stone and re-design the ring slightly to allow for a 6 prong setting. It might cost a little right now, but much better than the cost of replacing the stone!

I don't think that sounds right. My ring is 4 prong, and so is my mother's. She will be married for 25 years next Friday. She has never kept up with her ring the way you should. It's never been regularly checked, cleaned, nothing. She lost her stone last year because the prongs had worn down. But that was after 24 years of neglect! We found the stone and I paid $150 to get the head of her ring replaced.

If you are having issues I'd say that it's probably just set poorly, or maybe even a bad head. 6 prong isn't necessarily the only solution. I'd take it to another jeweler and get their opinion on the quality of the setting.

This hasn't been an issue for me either. I have had my ring since September and they encouraged me to have my prongs checked every six months. I went back in March to do this and the jewelers said the prongs looked just as they did when I received the ring and I play college softball and usually leave my ring on for practices and even sometimes for games.

I haven't had this issue either... that does not seem right. I thought this post was going to be about pave set sidestones... those fall out/become loose very easily.

I have been wearing my engagement ring with an oval-cut solitaire with a four-prong setting for almost a year now and haven't had any trouble with it *knock on wood* My fiance said his sister who has a marquise cut had her setting changed from four prong to six prong, but I'm not sure if she was having trouble with it or just felt more secure. It seems surprising that you're having trouble if you took it back to a good jeweler!

I have a 3 stone e-ring, round cuts, and have not had a problem. I'm sure 6 prongs are more secure, but I'd think if you are getting it checked/cleaned regularly they should not be getting to that point, especially multiple times. I would definiely spring for insurance (I did because I was just paranoid about losing them). For $6/mo, if a stone falls out, it's 100% covered.

I have diamonds going half way around my band, and all of them are four-pronged. After one year, none have come lose. I'd take it to another jeweler to play it safe!
