Alterations/bustle question

I am going for my first dress fitting Friday and just wondering what to expect out of it from those of you who have already had theirs. I am undecided on what type of bustle I want due to cost. I would like to get a ballroom bustle. Anyone have any general estimates on what the cost should be?

my seamstress charges $15 per point.  she said my dress will be between 3 and 5 points.  so $45 - $75.  from what i've heard the bustle isn't very expensive compared to everything else.  the hem is the most expensive part i think, but maybe it's just that way for me because my dress is lace all over:

  • My bustle wasn't very much, maybe $50. But the hem is like $300 because I have about 10 layers!
  • I just had my first appointment last week. My seamstress is going to hem, bustle and taking the dress in. Her price was $285. My dress has a lot of ruffled layers and a long train, so it took her a while to get the bustle pinned when i was there.

  • My dress is flowy without too many layers. The person doing mine is a friend so she's charging $175 for everything (bustle, hem, etc.)

  • I went to my first fitting thinking that I needed to know which type of bustle I wanted to have. But the seamstress just went to work on the bustle without asking me, and it came out amazing! If you have a seamstress who is used to doing wedding gowns, she should be able to figure out your bustle on her own, and it will be the bustle that works best with your dress. I'm sure if for whatever reason, you didnt like it, they'd take some suggestions or change it around a bit.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what my bustle will cost. I love the way she did it and I never even thought to ask her! I'm hoping its under $250...

  • My seamstress is taking in the bust a little and my bustle. Total alterations were $150. No hem needed *whew*

  • My alterations are $240. This includes the dress being taken in about an inch on each side, & the bustle.

  • My alterations are currently at $160, but my seamstress doesn't charge a set cost per item, she charges $25/hour.  I have had the dress taken in, hemmed, and bustled (not sure which kind).  I also had some loose fabric tacked back.  Unfortunately, I have to take my dress back to her because I realized that it's too loose in the hips/stomach...I totally didn't notice it when I tried it on with her!  Whoops, lol
  • My seamstress is hemming the dress, adding a ballroom bustle, and taking in sides around my bust, hips, and thighs. She estimates my final cost will be between $250 and $300 total. She works for herself and is significantly less than what I'd expect to pay a bridal boutique to do alterations.

  • It probably also depends on the shop, different places charge different prices per inch.

  • I just went for my first fitting on Monday and I wasn't told what the cost was per item but all I need (at this point) is the hem and the bustle. I'm doing a French bustle but I really just went with her recommendation and expertise. She looked at my dress and felt that was the best way to fit with the design and it looks great based on how it was pinned! If she doesn't have to do anything else like take it in, we're looking at around $300.

  • I've had 2 fittings so far...just remember to verbalize what you want done.

Persoanlly, I'm doing a double french bustle on my dress and was also charged "per point." Total so far my alterations have been about $190 but I also live in Indiana which has a lower cost of living then up state NY...

  • I am getting a french bustle, the whole dress taken in 1.5 sizes, a black sash sewn on and darts in the top all for $95.00. I am not sure which alterations cost what though. Mine seems cheaper then the average though based off above responses...
My lady works from home, her entire 1400 sqf basement is set up like a pro shop, and she does AHMAZING work! I sew and alter myself( clothes and auto interior), and was thoroughly impressed by her.

  • I went to my first fitting last weekend - it was a little stressful
a Saturday afternoon at Davids Bridal - arghhhhh

I have a ballgown and it needed about 10 points so it ended up being $120
luckily no hem needed - for once my height is a good thing
  • thanks for all the feedback! it ended up being $299 :( more than i wanted to spend. The bustle needed to be 7 point and i needed a hem and taken in at the bust. I totally forgot how many layers my dress actually has...haha
