July 2012 Weddings

I need an arm workout.

Anyone have one? Something I can do at home? I know I can do pushup but I hate them. I have weights and resistance bands. Help me please!

Re: I need an arm workout.

  • I always create my own arm "circuits" when I go to the gym. I do a combination of the following, with plank holds/abs/pushup sets in between the sets of arm exercises:

bicep curls - 3 kinds - straight forwards, diagonal to the side, and hammers
    shoulder presses (HEAVY weight)
tricep extensions - 2 kinds - one arm at a time, lunging forward, moving only the lower arm up and down, then triceps over the head with both arms holding weights (MEDIUM weigh)
weights straight in front of you up to shoulder height with straight arms (LIGHT weight)
weights straight out to the side with straight arms (LIGHT weight)
    flies (light-medium weight)
shoulder shrugs HEAVIEST weight you have

This should do it!!! I do 2 sets of twelve for every exercise following this format:
    12 regular lifts
    12 second dead hold
12 mini lifts (very quick, few inches worth of a movement).

in between your two sets, alternate these to give you more of a well rounded work-out
    10 v-sits
    10 pushups
    30 second plank hold
    15 second side plank hold
    15 squats
    15 lunges

(it's really weird trying to type out what I normally do, hahaha. I am not a trainer by any means so I don't know all the official words for these things!)
  • Yes please share. that's the only body part people will see on me and I need help too!
  • oh, and I kind of assumed you wanted to work shoulders too. I always do arm/shoulder stuff together :)

  • pushups are GREAT - I love them, and I love planks and plank holds too - but depending on your arm position, regular pushups tend to do more for your chest than for biceps/triceps. They are great for overall strength - I would make sure I did other stuff too. I L O V E tricep pushups - I would work those in with your regular push-ups as well (arms narrower, and when you go into the "down" postiion for your push-up, make sure your arms bend straight back with your arms brushing the side of your body rather than flaring out.) They are WAY harder so I would recommend doing them on your knees!
  • Ok this going to sound super lame, but get a shake weight. The choreographer I work with swears by it, and he would know.
