Gospel Reading and Prayer of the Faithful

I have in my notes that the priest chooses the gospel reading. However, I'm pretty sure that the priest reads it, but usually the couple chooses it? I don't think this is something particular to the parish, I think I accidentally wrote chooses when I meant to write reads, when I was making notes on choosing readers. Am I correct, or does the priest really choose the reading?

Also, we write the prayer of the faithful ourselves, right?

Sorry for the sort of obvious questions. My parents have been supposed to send me the instructional booklet from the parish for a month now, and they have yet to do it.

Yes usually the couple picks the gospel reading but the priest or deacon will be the one to actually read it during the ceremony. Also it is usually an option to write your own prayers of the faithful but you should talk to your priest about this and be prepared to go over what you have written with him, he may ask that you make a few changes or have suggestions. In the booklet we received there were some prayers of the faithful that we could choose from which gave us a good starting point when trying to wirte our own.

  • We ended up just using the standard prayer in the Together for Life book. And yes, I think it is customary for the couple to choose the gospel reading. Ours was pretty neat because it ended up being the priest's favorite, so he had a lot to say about it. :)

  • Ditto Tami. Usually the couple chooses their own gospel reading, but I would double check on both of those things. Contact the parish where you will be getting married directly, since your parents haven't sent the info to you yet.

We were encouraged to "tweak" one of the Prayers of the Faithful that was in the Together for Life book, which I thought worked out well. We were able to keep or adjust those intentions that worked and then add a couple that were specific to us. I might have also changed the order around to one that I thought flowed a little better.

  • The Priest has the option to pick it himself..usually they allow the couple to choose it, but it is perogative. Double check with him.

  • I was just thinking about that today. We met with our priest and in my notes I wrote that the reader can do the gospel, which I thought was a little odd.. has anyone ever heard of that? I do know he said we could choose the gospel we wanted from the Together For Life book. I have 2 readers like he suggested, but i'm thinking I may have written the wrong information down?

If the priest actually allows that, it is DEFINITELY a BIG no-no, and illicit.<div>Grr.... I hate it when priests think that the liturgy is their own personal playground and they can do whatever they want with it...</div>

  • Nevermind. I found my notes and called Father, I was wrong he reads the Gospel and we choose it. I thought something didn't seem right there! We finished our RCIA class last night and our teacher is working on becoming a Deacon and was talking about learning how to do the Gospels and Homily. At our parish, whoever does the Gospel does both. He's okay with the Gospel, it's the homily that has him nervous. I told him it's like doing anything else, once you get up and do it, you lose all nervousness.

I'm glad I got that straightened out!! One reader is Catholic and one isn't so now I can switch what they are reading. My sister is not Catholic and was very nervous when I explained the responsorial to her!
