XP - Dog Probs

FI's dog, Riley, has been having some problems lately.  Riley is a 10 1/2 year old Australian Cattle dog that has more energy that many dogs that I've ever known.  He has quite the personality!  He's a great dog and has never had any problems.  In 10 years FI has only had to take him to the vet for routine shots/checkups.  Never had an ear infection or anything at all.
Lately he started having some problems with peeing and excessive thirst.  We chalked it up to old age.  But, then it started getting real bad so he took him to the vet.  At first the vet said it was most likely old age but did a blood and urine test.  Vet called the next day and said that he had high calcium and to bring him back for another test.  The next test revealed the same thing.  She said that high calcium generally meant cancerous tumors.  What???  So back he went for xrays.  He had no tumors visable on the Xrays.  Good news, but the bad news is that the vet said it was most likely lymphoma and that left untreated Riley could be gone in 1-2 months.  The vet wanted to consult her colleague and called today to say that there was a slight chance it could be a thyroid issue.  FI is taking Riley back in the morning for another blood test and it will take about 4 days to get the results.
If the results show it's a growth on the thyroid it can be treated with surgery and some meds.  If it's not, then it's most likely lymphoma.  If it is lymphoma then that means FI, his daughter and I need to decide if chemo is the right road for him.
So now we wait to see what the next test says.  I pray that it's the thyroid and treatable.  But the vet did say she's only seen that herself 3 times in 30 years.  But also did say it's becoming increasingly common.
I hated seeing FI hurt so bad. It was devistating news.  Riley's attitude has remained really great and you wouldn't know he was sick, except for the pee :(
I've had a dog with Addison's disease who passed away in her sleep peacefully and it was so hard.  The hardest part of owning a pet is losing him/her.  But always have to remember how much joy they bring for many years.
Sorry for the long post, but I know a lot of you have pets and I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with lymphoma or sudden onset of excessive thirst/urination in their pets and what the diagnosis is.
We are very sad about all of this and just going to try to take one day at a time and hope for the best!!

  • I'm so sorry that you guys are going through this... Been there, and it's the worst part of loving our canine pals. Has your vet checked for cushing's disease? It has similar symptoms to normal aging. Whatever you decide, I wish you and your family the best.

  • Cushings has not come up yet.  I will certainly mention to the vet.  Thank you!!

  • We had a cat with diabetes who had the same issues of excessive thirst and urinating where he was not supposed to. Perhaps that's a possibility?

  • So sorry you're going through this.

  • I have no experience with the symptoms you're describing but wanted to say I'm sorry. :( I love my doggie and can't imagine how sad this would make me. I'll be praying for a thyroid issue too!
  • I'm so sorry that you guys are going through this. Pets bring such joy into our lives, and it's so hard to lose them, or to see them sick.

Yes, I have experienced having a dog with excessive water intake, and lots of peeing. My folks took her to the vet, and it ended up being diabetes. This was years ago, and Cuddles lived quite happily with diabetes for 4 years, by which she was 14 and completely blind.

If I were you guys, I would certainly get a second opinion. Much luck to you, and you guys and the furball are in my thoughts!

<div>Ditto! I know it's not a cat OP is talking about, but our cat was the same way. It was diabetes... Sad we didn't catch it in time, he passed away from multiple organs failing.</div>
