San Francisco & Napa

So my fiance and I are going to San Francisco & Napa for our honeymoon on 7/29 and I'm starting to think about packing but am not 100% sure what I want to bring. Chicago's going through a heat wave so I've been wearing nothing but sundresses lately so I feel like my idea of "hot" & "cold" is a little skewed right now haha.

I looked at the forecast for San Francisco & it looks like it's going to be in the 50's & 60's....have any of you been there recently/do you live there? And if so what would you suggest I bring?

I'm edging toward sundresses and cardigans, but I don't want to be cold so I'm thinking about packing some jeans and maybe even 1 pair of boots...but I'd so much rather wear sundresses! What do you think?

Re: San Francisco & Napa

  • I live near Napa. San Francisco will probably be chilly in the mornings and evenings. Bring a light coat. Napa gets HOT. This is my first summer up here but it has been quite toasty. So, shorts, t-shirts, tank tops, dresses, a lot of hot summer stuff!

Have fun though! It's a really fun area to be in! :-)

How fun! We leave on Sat. from chicago to head to SF for 4 days then Carmel for 3. We're also doing a day trip to Napa. It's our first anniversary trip.

I frequent the Trip Advisor boards for SF and there are a lot of knowledgeable locals there. Someone just asked what the pack as far as clothes, and they suggested lots of layers. It could easily be a 20 degree temperature change from morning to afternoon or from one part of the city to another. They did say near the water is cold and recommended scarves, gloves, hats, etc. Same for if you plan on going on a ferry or over to Alcatraz. I have heard Napa can be completely different and be in the 80s while SF is in the 50s or 60s.

I don't think you will be able to wear sundresses in the city, but possibly Napa. They said jeans, boots, a sweater, coat, gloves and scarves are not atypical for SF in the morning or evenings.

We'll be leaving the area just as you are arriving but I hope you have a great trip!

We just did this trip the week of July 4.

I am from Texas where it already close to 100.  In SF when we were out for the day, I wore layers--T-shirt with a hoodie or sweater and jeans.  At night, I tried to dress a little nicer and wear just a black sweater, but we took cabs mostly to dinner, and while I was waiting, I was cold.  In general, it was in the mid-60's to low 70's (I think the warmest day we had was 72) and in the 50's at night (which is cold to me).  Also, there is usually always a breeze, which is much stronger by the water.  Mornings when we left the hotel were mid to high 50's.  In general, I felt perfectly comfortable during the day, but was a little cold at night.  Being from Texas, I just don't have a ton of cold weather outfits and brought every long-sleeved shirt I had.  But the T-shirt/hoodie combo worked well so I just wore it almost every day!

The locals wear boots, light jackets and overcoats over tops and T-shirts with jeans.

In Napa, I wore capris with a light sweater set the first day and a little casual dress the second day and at night to dinner wore a long sundress with a black sweater, as the Napa nights are also cool (I think it was 57 that night).  We were only in Napa for 2 days/1 night and both days were low 80's (which is not hot to me--more like perfect!)  I much preferred the Napa weather to SF.  Here are some pics, HTH

SF:  (My husband isn't as cold natured as I am.)

    Napa:

ETA:  I really wanted to pack a light overcoat for SF, but my husband said no because my bag was already over the limit!  :)
  • Never been to Napa, but bring comfortable shoes to SF. I am in pretty good shape, but my legs were so sore when I was there.  I was ready for some hills, but those will tire you out and kill your feet.

  • Oh and we did a boat ride on the bay and I expected to freeze to death but did fine just wearing a light Juicy sweatsuit (although you could definitely dress warmer).  Generally after 5:30 every day in SF, I started to get cold but luckily we were usually heading back to the hotel by then to rest and change for dinner.
  • We were there in August last year for our HM. The key idea as stated many times, dress in layers. I had a hoodie on for our trip over the Golden Gate Bridge, on the top of a double decker bus and froze my azz off, seriously. I had to buy a lined jacket to wear while there as the hoodie was not enough in and around SF.

Enjoy! It's a magical place and I also agree with visiting www.tripadvisor.com for restaurants and other activities/things to see.
  • I'm in downtown San Francisco right now. Today I wore wool socks, slacks, long-sleeved undershirt, long-sleeved blouse, and a cotton cardigan sweater. I was a bit cold walking to lunch. I'll need my wool coat when I go home late this evening. This is how it will be in 2 weeks when you're here, too. I basically never wear dresses in San Francisco, unless the formality of the event requires it. I get too cold.

I've only been to Napa a few times in the summer. I remember it being warm, 75-85.

  • That was our honeymoon trip, too! We were there in October and Napa was having a heat wave. Go figure. San Francisco is always a little chilly. Have fun!

For burritos in the Mission district, I recommend Pancho Villa.
