Newbie! Local or destination wedding?

Hi everyone! I'm a newbie but have been lurking for a while. Newly engaged on New Years! =)

The FI and I haven't really set a date yet.. or location for that matter. I work in the industry and it would ideally be "easier" to have our wedding here locally.... but the only problem is that I don't know if I can keep my guest list down (it could easily go up to over 200 guests!), so we have been thinking about a destination wedding... so *hopefully it would be more like 75 guests.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm partial to local weddings myself, with strong parameters on the guest list to keep it in check if necessary (ie, no kids or no cousins or no great-aunts-we-haven't-seen-in-a-decade or whatever). There are a lot of great locations in Central Florida that are lovely and budget/high guest list accommodating :) One of my bridesmaids got engaged last summer and she and her FI are still wrestling with their guest list =/ I'd say start first and foremost with a budget; that will determine a lot of what you can do. From there you can start on the guest list and then if you see that, even with parameters, it's still way out of hand you can go the DW route. If not, you can start looking at venues and pick a date! :)
Either which way it's up to you but congratulations on your engagement and welcome to the board!
    That's Mrs.skWhitneyAmanda to you!

We were in the same boat... if we did a local wedding in NY we would easily have over 200... we opted for the destination wedding in Orlando and loved it! We ended up having just under 80 people!

You can always stick with a local wedding and have it be close friends and family only. Pick a venue with a maximum occupancy and design your guest list around that. There is no reason for everybody you have ever known to be at your wedding!

Just a reminder to be careful with mentioning your job. The knot is very picky when it comes to people in the industry discussing their work! :)

I just got married on January 15th...We live in Boston but were married in Orlando. Overall, it ended up being a nice day but a few things went wrong that were beyond our control. Our guest list was cut in half 2 weeks before the wedding because some of our guests couldn't afford to fly because they lost their jobs etc. and because of the short notice we had to pay for them anyways. I doubt that would happen to you, but it's something to keep in mind with the economy being like it is. Expect less gifts too...

I wish I could have met all of my vendors in person...I may have chosen a few different vendors if I had a face to face meeting with them. I felt like an afterthought to many of my vendors, and I had a few big issues with a couple of my major vendors that perhaps could have been prevented if I had more time with them .

All in all I will say that I do regret having a destination wedding... I wish I had waited until June when the weather is warm in Boston and had the wedding at home.

Gina!!! I'm sad that you wouldn't have a destination wedding again, but I get why... but I think it was still awesome because we got to hang out hahahaha!

I think I would still choose to have a destination wedding but DEF choose some different vendors, with that said a lot of our vendors were amazing too, so I'm glad we went with them!!!! Oh and I second the expecting less gifts... lol

Congratulations.  We opted for a destination wedding.  It was difficult to plan, but totally worth it.  I'm sure you will decide what is best for you, but through all the hassle, our destination wedding was totally worth it.

    Happy Planning.
