Honeymoon Help! Costa Rica or Belize

I am currently trying to plan our honeymoon and have kind of hit a road block. I have narrowed it down to Costa Rica or Belize  and sometime in the middle of November 2013, but am still unsure of where to stay. I love the beach but don't necessarily want to spend alot of time on it as we are definiteyl adventure people and like to be on the go. I want to be able to do lots of activities in the area and experience everything the country has to offer. We don't necessarily have a strict budget but would like to keep it around 5-6K. Any suggestions would be helpful!!

Re: Honeymoon Help! Costa Rica or Belize

  • I haven't been to Belize, but Costa Rica has both beaches and adventure! Manuel Antonio is the beachy area I stayed. It also has fantastic national parks full of monkeys, sloths, etc. Other parts of the country include the volcano (Arenal), and cloud forest (Monteverde). You can hit all 3 in a 10 day trip easily (for the 5-6K mark depending on hotel choices)

Belize has the Great Hole if you're into snorkeling or SCUBA. Other than that I don't know much about what it has to offer. I'll get there eventually (I SCUBA).
  • We're going to Belize for our honeymoon next July.  We're flying round-trip from Boston to Belize and staying for 7 nights for well under $5K.  (Food and activities will obviously add to the cost, but $5-6K will definitely cover everything.)  I'm not a super-beachy person either, but Belize appears to have lots of inland activities.  My FI and I are planning on going cave tubing and ziplining, as well as checking out some Mayan ruins.

    Hope that helps!

Where are you staying in Belize? My husband and I are working on booking our belated HM now.
    thanks!
  • We went to our honeymoon in Costa Rica, and there was so much to do!  We were there for 9 days, and only paid $3500, including activities every day.  For the first half of our honeymoon, we stayed in Arenal, near the volcano, and we did horseback riding to the La Fortuna waterfalls, hiked the volcano, visited the hot springs, and zip-lined.  The town of La Fortuna is nice for a day trip, to visit the shops and enjoy the local cuisine.  For our second half, we went to Manuel Antonio, where we visited their National Park, enjoyed the gorgeous white sand beaches, and went on a 5 hour catamaran tour, where we went snorkeling, dolphing and whale watching, and they served us dinner.  There was so much to do in Costa Rica, and we really want to go back!  We also looked into going to Belize, but there seemed to be a wider variety of activities in Costa Rica.  Have fun!

We decided on Robert's Grove in Placencia.

  • I've been to Placencia. Your going to love it! In fact, you'll get sick of eating lobster! Mingle with the natives, we did and were exposed to so much more...invited to a local pig roast which was awesome! Discovered the local baker who made cinnamon rolls/bread that was to die for. Watch out for the sea urchins they can give a sting like no other!
  • We just got back from our honeymoon in Costa Rica and I can't wait to go back.  We first went to the Arenal Volcano area and stayed at Arenal Nayara Hotel.  (Amazing!)  We did some excursion while we were there.  After that we headed to the Guanacaste provence and the JW Marriott.  Since the JW is kinda isolated it is really more of a sit by the pool and beach type of place.
  • I have not been to Costa Rica, but my fiance and I went to Belize on our last vacation (in August).  We loved it there!  It is a beautiful country and the people are super friendly.  Also, because it is not a very big country (about the size of Massachusetts if I remember correctly!) you can really see pretty much every part of the country in one trip without exhausting yourself.
We are not really huge beachy people (a couple of days on the beach is enough for us for one vacation) but there is a lot of other things to do in Belize as well.  We actually went to Belize specifically to see Mayan ruins and they did not disappoint!  There is also a lot of adventure type of activities (cave tubing, ziplining, etc) that you can participate in.  Good luck with your planning! :-)
  • Where did you stay at in Belize?

  • @dzinegrl Where did you book through? The price sounds amazing! How much spending money should someone bring?
  • Have been to Costa Rica, but not Belize, although I did a lot of research on Belize as we were considering it for our honeymoon. I think if you are interested in snorkelling or scuba, Belize may be the better option. Both seem to have tons of adventure/excursions. Belize has the Mayan ruins, which Costa Rica doesn't have. Costa Rica does have ziplines, hiking, waterfalls, and tons of wildlife (Belize has all these things too). In November, there's a chance you could see the humpback whales on the Pacific side of Costa Rica. I think you can't go wrong with either choice. We loved Costa Rica, and can't wait to go back, but we also want to get to Belize sometime too.
  • I have been to Costa Rica but not Belize.  I think that Costa Rica is great in November as the rainy season has just ended and the rainforest will be very lush.  There are many things to do all year round in Costa Rica but I think they have the best weather during the "winter season" (November-march).  Both places have the same sort of activities and excursions as well as similar food.  Honestly at this point just pick whichever is cheaper as you will be sure to have an amazing time in either country.
