Disagree with cake designer

Me and my fiance went the other day to order our wedding cake and we had an idea in mind. Our colors are black, white and horizon blue so we wanted a white cake with black swirl designs with our monogram in the middle with blue ribbon around the base of the three layers. The lady taking our order told us that wouldn't look good and we should just stick to the black and white and use black ribbon. What do you think would look better? I thought the bright blue would look good with the black and white.

I love the idea of a black and white cake with the blue ribbon around the layers. I think that'd look really sleek and modern with a pop of color in there :-)

Not everything has to match :-P

I'd ask her what makes her think it wouldn't look good.  If it's a matter of taste then just ignore her (and frankly it was none of her business).  But maybe the particular blue that they use gets runny or something and she's afraid there will be technical problems with the rest of the cake.  I'd find out why she'd jump all over something that, frankly, seems really cute.

I agree with this. I think its a cute idea. Just black and white sounds a little plain. I love your idea. I think if she isnt willing to give you an answer as to why she doesnt like it and if she isnt willing to do your idea I would find someone else. It isnt her wedding!

If it isn't a technical problem - let her know that it is your money, your vision, and if in the end you don't agree stylistically - you can live with that.

It's one thing if she thinks it wont match, but another if there would be something wrong structurally wrong, which I don't think there is since she's encouraging you to just use a different color.

Agreed. If it's purely her preference that the cake should only be black and white, tell her to shut up and the make the cake the way you asked for it. :)

Ours was chocolate brown & blue, so similar.  Though we did white on white swirls and a double ribbon layer at the base.  I agree that if it's just her preference rather than a technical issue, do it your way.  Here's how ours turned out.  BTW those purple flowers on top were actually blue in person.  :)

I think that would look great! Black and white match everything, and the blue would add a splash of color that would offset it very nicely. She probably could have suggested using a darker blue rather than something really bright instead of just nixing it altogether.

it can both ways. you can trust her expertise and advice, or just tell her its what YOU want.

You're paying her to design the cake. Tell her that is what you want, and if she doesn't want to make your cake the way YOU want it, find someone else.

Thank you everybody for your input. Yeah it was just her thinking it wouldn't look good because my bridesmaids are wearing black dresses with blue shoes and the guys are going to have blue vests and ties and there will be blue flowers but she said that's not enough blue and people will be confused by the blue on the cake. Nothing technical at all.  I thought it would add a nice touch of color. Maybe I will do a double ribbon like Girlie1030 did (thanks for the idea). In the end I think I will do what I want and what I originally planned. Thanks againSmile

I don't see what the cake designers big issue was to begin with.

    Black and white match anything.....

As a cake decorator myself I kind of agree with your designer. In my head the blue ribbon seems a bit out of place. If you added some hints of blue in the swirls or the monogram (maybe a few dots here and there) it would pull things together nicely. But like you said you will probably just go with your original plan and there is nothing wrong with that. If that is really what you want then go with it.

Another option is to do the black ribbon and put little hints of blue in the swirls or monogram or find a black and blue ribbon or double ribbon so the blue is not so prominent..
