Help!! Not sure about out Photog.

So we initially chose an old co-worker who is a professional photographer to take our pics. He's OOT and said he'd only charge us $250 for a $1,000 package!! Great!! The problem is, my mom just asked what was in the photography package and I believe it's only a CD of the pics he takes. I texted him to see what the package includes, but haven't heard back yet.

Do you think a disc of pictures is worth $250? We have other family/friends that are photographers (it runs in the family) and one said he'd be a free second shooter. Help!!

how important are the pictures to you/your FI?
    1. i dont really care its more of a formality
    2. they'd be nice to have, but i'll probably only put them in an album
    3. I want to have a full account of the day and the people that were there
    4. I want great quality pictures of the whole event
    5. I'm hanging them up around the house and sending them out as gifts/TY notes, etc
    6. I want pieces of art that I can be proud to own

1-2 = hire a family member or friend, and get the CD afterwards. you can print them at walmart or wherever you want

3-6 = hire a professional. again a CD would be fine so that you can print them from wherever (sites like snapfish can do this too).  The quality of picture will depend on the professional. do your research and look at samples of their work.  in our area, we found that 1,000 got us very simple looking pictures without much actual photography talent. 2,000 got us very nice quality photos, but not really artistic composition. 3,000+ gave us art (nealurban.com). also pay attention to 1 vs 2 shooters, as well as hours of coverage. our photog will do ALL day coverage for a flat price - no matter how long the day is! a lot of photogs limit to 6 hours - which means they leave halfway through your recpetion unless you pay extra. he also includes an engagement session and professionally edits/re-colors  75 of the Epics and 100 of the wedding photos.

in my opinion, the CD is the most important part. as long as you have digital rights to the images, you can edit and print them however or wherever you want.  lots of sites do prints for cheap.  a lot of photographers will charge more money because they'll throw in 200 wallet sized prints, etc, etc.  if its a deal, great. if not, you can do it elsewhere for cheap.

bottom line. $250 for all day coverage and a CD is a great deal -- as long as you are happy with the quality of photos.

For the pictures to be high quality for printing, making an album, etc., they need to be high resolution images which normally would be given to you on a DVD, not a CD.  So I would clarifty that.  You also need to make sure you have the printing rights to the photos.  I would also want to know how many pictures you should expect and how many hours he will be there.

My husband is a professional photographer and he always gives his clients a DVD with high resolution pictures.  Getting the disc of pics is much bettter than getting prints.  I'm assuming if he is giving you the disc then you are getting the rights to the pictures.  If he is good then for $250 you are getting a steal

Like the PP said, a CD will not give you high resolution photos, only a DVD will. So you will notice the difference if you blow the picture any larger than a 5x7.
I have a family of photographers as well, so I am extremely picky on the quality of photos. Also, are your photos going to be retouched and edited? If you just get a CD of raw images of your day, I would think you are going to be disapointed.
