Changing your name

For those of us changing our names, do we have a list somewhere of all the places we need to change our name? Maybe a June or May Knottie can help?

I was getting ready to write my goodbye email to my suppliers for work (still have a week and a half of work left but I'm travelling most of next week) & I was going to include my new email addy but a co worker just told me what a pain it was to get our IT group to change it. They won't until they have the marriage license, then she said something about a social security card, bank accounts, drivers license...I know I have to do all that but it never occurred to me that it would be THAT much.

So...anyone have a list??

I know:
driver's license
bank accounts
social security card
bills?? Mortgage, insurance, etc.?

What am I missing??

Everything else you'd do when you change your mailing address: bills, insurances, magazine subscriptions, dentist/doctor, license, car registration (?? not sure?), SS card, your work, friends/families, passport, bank, etc.

social security is what you change first. I found quite a few helpful links on pinterest for all the things that need to be changed. There is a helpful tutorial on our courthouse website that i have already watched. it's a LOT of work!!

oh and PS, our mortgage broker said it really wouldn't be possible to change my name on our mortgage documents. you can change your name on the title of your property by filing additional documentation - I would talk to a realtor or a real estate attorney about that, but it is a fairly simple process here.

I agree with PP. You have to start at Social Security then you can go on and change everything else.

I am planning on starting with my social security card and then my driver's license. I believe you need a certified copy of your marriage license to file your name change with social security so you have to wait for that first. I know my city where I got the marriage license says it can take a few weeks to get certified copies of the marriage license. After I get the drivers license, I will work on everything else including deeding over our house to our new name, another pain in the butt fee for $125

speaking of this....just got the most annoying phone call. I paid for, arranged, scheduled, and was present at the appointment where the maintenance person came out to set up our security system (our home was built with the system installed, so we just had to have a guy come out and basically turn it on). He came out yesterday and I signed the contract, but I decided to put fiance's name as the main contact on the 911/police sheet, since it might get confusing when I change my name.

Our contact with the security system called me today and told me "since we aren't married, and fiance is the one on the contact sheet, I am not allowed to sign the paper. in fact, they don't even have proof that I live at the home, since fiance's name is the main contact in our security paperwork, so we need to arrange another meeting to get everything put in fiance's name".

SERIOUSLY?!?!? I AM SO ANNOYED RIGHT NOW. I paid for everything, gosh darn it.

FYI you don't have to start with Social Security. I started with the Secretary of State, then went to the bank, THEN went to SS. No issue.

And what do you guys mean by a certified copy of the license? I took our copy with the seal on it and brought it place to place. That worked just fine.

The whole name changing process scares me a little - like I'll forget to change it on something and get myself into trouble. In particular, my house deed and mortgage.

I am in the middle of taking my architectural registration exams - 4 down, 3 to go - and I have to fill out a specail affidavit for that. I'm scared I won't be able to take my next test b/c my driver's license will have my new name and I'll still be in their systems as my maiden name. If you have any kind of professional license, check with the registration board on what to do for name change.

Don't forget about passports, student loans, and paychecks!

For my first marriage, I didn't change my name with the SS office but I did everything else. Everything was fine but I was really young & basically just needed to change bank accounts. Then like 5 years later I got a notice from my work that they would have to stop issuing me a paycheck if I didn't change my name with SS. So I went down and changed it and all was fine.

I'm older now & more established so I just want to make sure I do everything right this time around.

Butterfly - I know! That's so annoying. FI and I live together in the house that I bought with my XH. Some of our bills still have my name and XH, some are just in my name. But FI can't request info on some of them because they are so strict since his name isn't on the account even though he pays the bill.

Most states do require a certified copy of the marriage license. I just waited at the SS office for an hour and a half with the copy of the marriage license that was given to me (a temporary one, not certified) to be turned away and told to wait till I get the certified copy. The state of Hawaii gave me the temporary one, but California will not accept it. It may depend on the state so be sure you check beforehand. Starting with the SS office is first though.
