Snarky Brides

Bridezilla Vent

So me and my fiance and both extremely laid back, calm, easy going people.  I have a stressful job, so it's very hard for me to get worked up and stressed about anything, including this wedding.  I have found it so annoying though that several friends that have known me for years have asked "so are you going to turn into a bridezilla?"  I find it disappointing that people that know me so well and know how I react truly seem to think that wedding planning can change girls.  Ugh.  Anyone else dealt with this sort of attitude from friends?

Maybe but when I asked the one friend if he seriously thought that would be me he said explained how weddings can change girls and it's always the quiet ones that become bridezillas...

  • You know, this is happening because of the reality shows and how they edit and capitalize on such behavior.  It has become popular entertainment so people just kind of take off with it.

It is annoying and can really hurt your feelings but if someone asks you that you can just say, "I've never treated people badly like that before and I sure don't want my wedding to be remembered like that.  Of course I will not act like that!"  Or whatever other version floats your boat.

I'm guessing those who ask really don't understand how that could hurt someone's feelings and are more joking around.
  • Is it possible that your friends are joking with you? My friends all told me that I'd cry at the wedding, even though they knew I wouldn't because I'm a hard ass pterodactyl.

  • Don't sweat it. Everyone thought I would be a bridezilla and I was totally chill. One person even asked (jokingly!) if I was on drugs. They were all surprised at how completely unstressed I was during the whole process.

Really, if you get upset about the insinuation that you'll become a bridezilla, it'll make you look like one. I do think the word gets thrown around too easily, but I guess that's the result of the level of entitlement more and more brides seem to have these days.

I agree that these reality shows are completely to blame. You would think people would get that anything on tv is going to be completely over dramatacized.

  • I can't think of a single instance of someone even mentioning the word "bridezilla" me while I was wedding planning. Maybe it's because we had 23 months from the time we got engaged to our wedding date, or maybe because I planned long distance (wedding in CA, we live in FL), but yeah, no one called me "bridezilla".

Didn't you have your tear ducts removed prior to the wedding? You know, since you weren't using them anyway. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

  • I think that is just a term that is seriously over used right now.   It's one of those words I really would love to never hear/read again. They're either dumb for thinking that all brides go insane, or they were trying to be funny.

  • If you can't take a joke or a little good natured ribbing once in a while you're probably a little more uptight than you think.

Next time someone calls you a bridezilla just say "Fuckyeah, you have to wear a seafoam green monstrosity as your bridesmaid dress!!! LOL"

  • Something similar to this has happened to me but on the other spectrum of being too laid back.  I told people that I was letting the BM pick out their shoes and makeup and hair style but we are paying for them to get it done.  I have gotten side-eyed all the time but I agree with PP about the reality TV.  People almost expect you to be rude and demanding.  Maybe it was a joke because you are so laid back.

If your ticket is correct it looks like you have over 2.5 years to go until your wedding.  Have you started to plan anyting?  I personally wouldn't just because so many things can change in between now and then.  Venue pricing, friendships, anything really.

I got engaged in January of 2011 and we set our date in August of that year.  We knew we wanted to have a summer wedding and didn't wnt to only have 4 months to plan everything.  In August we started to talk about things and in September we started to get serious about the wedding planning and the first thing I did was get my dress.

One word of advice after you get your dress or anything done, don't continue to look at those things on line and in magazines.  There will always be something you wish you could have done different if you continue to look!

    Best of luck!!

Eh, I don't think her sense of humor is the problem. I don't care who you are, if people are constantly making the same stupid joke or assumption, then eventually it's going to get on your nerves. It doesn't make you uptight, it makes you annoyed that people either think that of you or have no original material.

Thank you.  I'm not angry, not upset, and I generally have a pretty good sense of humor.  However, I just don't get why people that know me pretty well would think that suddenly being engaged would change me.

This is kinda what I was getting at.  I can't really imagine getting that bent out of shape over people teasing you about being a bridezilla if you really don't care about it.
