NEY WSG (Wellness Support Group)- Introduction, Poll, and GOODIES!

Hi Ladies-

What do you think of the WSG thing? I like the idea of wellness- because it can include various different goals such as fitness goals, weight loss goals, simply eating better, stress reduction, and other wellness related things that I probably can't think of.

As you reach your goals, you'll get to display an awesome keychain in your siggy! I will chose your charms with love- they will be a surprise and each person's charms will be different- so you'll want to reach your goals so that you can see what your next charm is going to be!

The following keychains show an example of a dolphin charm. What do you think?

    1. If you are overweight (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)- how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?
For example- I weigh 250 pounds- my 10% will be 25 pounds.

After reaching your 10%- you will receive your keychain for your siggy.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
Once you reach 25%, 50%, 75% completion towards your goal- you'll get a personalized charm!
I want to lose 100 pounds- so at 25 pounds lost, 50 pounds lost,  and 75 pounds lost I'll get a charm.

Once you've reached your goal- you'll "get a big ol' honkin' one for reaching your goal weight-  a bedazzled honker," per Liv. :)

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve? You'll get a charm for reaching significant fitness challenges- such as walking/running a 5k.

    4. If you are not overweight. Do you also want to participate? What goals do you have? When do you think you should receive your charms?

ZOMG! But the keychains are so KEWL! I want mine NOOWWW!

    What 10% Does For You
    Courtesy of Weight Watchers

Striving for your college-days weight or some other magic number on the scale can be daunting. It's much easier to reach for an incremental goal that promises sizable health benefits: Losing just 10 percent of your current body weight.

"So many projects in life are better managed by breaking them down into small chunks," says Karen Miller-Kovach, MS, RD, chief scientist at Weight Watchers International. "Weight loss is no different."

But the body you've always wanted isn't all you'll get out of accomplishing that one starter goal. Here's what else you'll gain by losing 10 percent:

    A Healthier Heart

By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you can lower your cholesterol and reduce your blood pressure, says G. Ken Goodrick, PhD, psychologist and associate professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. High cholesterol and elevated blood pressure are two major risk factors for heart disease.

Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

If you're overweight, you're at increased risk for type 2 diabetes, which means your body can't make enough, or properly use, insulin, a hormone that helps convert food to usable energy. By losing just 10 percent of your body weight, you'll improve your body's ability to use the insulin it makes, possibly preventing the onset of the disease, Miller-Kovach says. If you already have type 2 diabetes, shedding that 10 percent may improve your symptoms and possibly prevent complications, she adds.

    More Pep

"Just a 10 percent weight loss increases feelings of vigor and vitality," says Miller-Kovach. "You'll feel better and have more energy."

    A Mental Edge

Losing 10 percent can give you the self-confidence and motivation you need to keep going. "Success builds on success," says Miller-Kovach. But be sure you recognize it. "Losing 10 percent is a milestone in the journey," says Miller-Kovach. "Once you get there, take the time to congratulate yourself on your efforts."

    Reality Check

After losing 10 percent, you gain a sense of what it will take to lose the rest and reach your final goal weight. "It gives you a context in terms of saying, 'Am I willing to put in that much more effort to lose even more weight?'" Miller-Kovach says. If the answer is no, that's okay. "Some people only lose 10 percent and that's it," says Goodrick. If that's you, pat yourself on the back. "Health-wise, a 10-percent weight loss is a great achievement," Goodrick says.

And some other things before we start-

Important Guidelines for healthy weight loss

The Good Health Guidelines guide you toward healthy choices as you lose weight. These guidelines ensure you are getting the nutrients, vitamins and minerals you need to boost your health while losing weight.

    The Good Health Guidelines
    1. Eat at least five servings of vegetables and fruits each day, (nine servings if you weigh over 350 pounds.)
    2. Choose whole-grain foods, such as brown rice and oats, whenever possible.
    3. Include two servings of milk products – low fat (1%) or fat-free – each day. If you’re a nursing mom, teenager, over 50 years old, or weigh more than 250 pounds, you should have three servings of milk products each day.
    4. Have 2 teaspoons of healthy oils (olive oil, canola, sunflower, safflower or flaxseed) each day.
    5. Ensure that you are getting enough protein by choosing at least a serving or two of lean meats, skinless poultry, fish, beans, soy products, and lentils.
    6. Limit added sugar and alcohol.
    7. Drink at least 6 8-ounce glasses of liquid a day. Water is the best choice.
    8. Take a multiple vitamin-mineral supplement each day.
    What's a serving size?

    1. Fruits, vegetables and leafy greens
Serving sizes are 1 cup for leafy greens and 1/2 cup for all other vegetables and fruits. The lettuce alone in a large salad may well count for 2 or more vegetable servings. The default portion for most fruits and vegetables in the Plan Manager is one cup.

    2. Packaged whole grains
Use the nutrition label to determine the serving size of packaged whole grain foods.

    3. Milk and dairy
If you are more than 50 years old or are a teenager or a nursing mom, increase milk servings to three each day. Examples of one milk serving include 1 cup of milk or yogurt or 1 1/2 ounces of many cheeses.

    4. Healthy oils
Having 2 teaspoons of healthy oil each day ensures that you get the vitamin E and essential fatty acids that your body needs. Use the oil on salads, in cooking or as an ingredient in a mixed dish. Two teaspoons of oil is not even 1 tablespoon.

    5. Lean meat and fish
A serving of lean meat or fish is generally 3 to 4 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards.

    6. Water Six 8-ounce glasses of water is just 3 standard 16-ounce bottles.

    4. If you are not overweight. Do you also want to participate? What goals do you have? When do you think you should receive your charms?
I would like to participate. I have my fitness goals listed above. I would also like to change how I eat again and eat healthy. It's hard to think of all my goals, but if I come up with more, I'll post them. I don't know when I should receive my charms.

I weigh 222, so my 10% is 22.2 lbs (which would put me under the 200 mark!!!)

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
I want to lose at least 50lbs, but of course that number should probably be closer to 70. I'm going to start with 50.

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?
I want to start exercising a minimum of every other day. And I'd love to run a 5k and then 10k soon.

    4. If you are not overweight. Do you also want to participate? What goals do you have? When do you think you should receive your charms?

    1. If you are overweight how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?

I have to lose 15lbs to get to my 10% which is actually my original ultimate goal when I joined WW last year.  When I started WW I weighed 159, my 10% goal was 143 & my final goal was 135.  I'm 150 right now so I guess I'm kind of continuing on that path after falling off the wagon for a bit & now my 10% is my goal weight.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?

    15lbs

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?

-I do the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer every year. It's a total of 39 miles over 2 days (26 miles on day 1 & 13 miles on day 2).  I always complete 13 miles on both days but this year I want to do the whole 39 miles.
    -I want to run a 5k

    ETA 2 more goals:
    -Complete the 200 situps challenge
-Complete the 200 squats challenge (both posted by Liv!)

I was good all day, ran my mile plus walked close to 2 miles in addition to that, but then I ate TWO bowls of chili that I made (I didn't measure), only good thing is that it's a healthy recipe from SkinnyTaste but I think I could have done w/o that 2nd bowl. It was just so so yummy!! Also, I'm drinking wine. Foot in mouth

    1. If you are overweight (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)- how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?
My 10% goal at WW is 23lbs.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
I want to lose 65lbs to start. It really should be more for my BMI to be healthy, but I'm sticking with that for now.

25% - 16.25lbs (I'm gonna have the same lack of keychain problem...)
    50% - 32.5lbs
    75% - 48.75lbs

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?
    - I want to exercise at least 4 times a week for at least 45min each time
    - I want to run 5km (I can't run for crap right now, I'm hoping a new sports bra will help with the 'girls' part of my dislike for running!)
    - I want to increase my overall strength and tone my muscles so that when I lose the layer of padding, things have a nice shape - not sure how to best measure that as a goal, any suggestions?
    - I'm also really curious about the push-up/sit-up/squat challenge Liv was talking about...

I love the idea of it being a wellness group, not just weight loss! :)

I need to lose 20 lbs for 10%...

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
I would like to (ideally) lose 65 lbs., but know that I would still be at a healthy weight if I lost 45.

    25% = 16.25 lbs
    50% = 32.5 lbs
    75% = 48.75 lbs

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?  I would like to run a 5k this year!

Uhhhh...do I have to answer this?

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
To be at the top end of the "healthy" range BMI wise, I need to lose 27 pounds.
    25% = 7
    50% = 13.5
    75% = 20

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?
Get physical activity in every day for 2 weeks. (Not a heavy workout, but at least 5 minutes of stretching, yoga, or pilates.)

Be able to do all my Turbo Fire HIIT workouts (15, 20, and 25 minute HIIT workouts).

Do a full circuit of ChaLEAN extreme workouts.

    Maybe at least try Insanity?

Yes, I'd love to participate. I'm 5'5" and about 130 lbs. I could probably stand to lose about 5 more lbs, and would really love to tone up some more. I am definitely more toned now than when I started my group training program in January, but I need to be more consistent.

So my goals would be to work out arms, legs and abs at least twice a week each, as well as cardio x3. And I would like to add more fruits and vegetables to my diet, while cutting out some of the fatty foods (not all!) and some of the alcohol (definitely not all!)

    1. If you are overweight (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)- how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?

I'm at the top end of my healthy BMI, 10% for me is about 15 pounds.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?

I would like to lose 15 to 20 pounds, but I'm more interested in being healthy as a lifestyle. If that means that I lose 10 pounds, so be it and if it means losing 25 pounds that'll work too.

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?

    I'm going to start small...

Goal 1 - To do some type of cardio 3 times per week.

Goal 2 - To do some sort of weight training 3 times per week.

Goal 3 - To be consistent at keeping a food journal to review where my weaknesses are.

Okay, so I'm starting this based off of what my last weigh in was (which was when I started my Spin Bootcamp Challenge). I get my final weigh in a week tomorrow (!) along with measurements, but I'm not convinced anything's changed because I'm lazy. But we'll see!

    1. If you are overweight (www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)-">http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)- how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?
I'm going to round up from what I remember so 10% is 16 lbs.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
35-40 lbs, but let's say 35 since I'm not entirely sure where I started from.
    25% is 8.75
    50% is 17.5
    75% is 26.25

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?
Do something active every day for an extended period of time. Let's say, for 2 months right now? I don't care what it is as long as I'm doing something.

This sounded like a crazy goal to me at first too, but I've been doing it for almost 2 weeks now!

I would also like to lose a total of 10 inches off my body from my last measurements. I might add more to this later on, once I get my new measurements in a week.

And I voted for the first charm, but I like all of them. But I'm just curious, why the dolphin?

Too late- my heart's set on a dolphin charm now ;)

I really like this idea though, Lunar. Definitely a good way to keep people involved in personalized ways, but still keep it for the whole board.

    1. If you are overweight (http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/)- how much weight will you have to lose to lose 10% of your body weight?
Well I have al ready lost 20lbs, but gained about 7 back in Venezuela and now I am back to 157lbs :(... I would like to lose a total of 15lbs more. So I guess 1.5lbs.

    2. How much weight do you want to lose?
    15lbs so...

    25% -3.75lbs
    50% -7.5lbs
    75% -11.25lbs

    3. What fitness goals do you want to achieve?
Working out 3 days a week for 2 weeks straight.
Going to Yoga 2x a week.

    4. If you are not overweight. Do you also want to participate? What goals do you have? When do you think you should receive your charms?
When I achieve my goal weight, in hopefully about 2 months,. I will figure this one out!

So how do we do this? Do we have check-ins once a week? I can definitely see how NEYWSG (Naywassaj in layman's terms) will motivate me to workout during my 4th of July staycation, so I'm already excited that we're doing this!

I'm excited for this. I'm not starting my diet/work-outs until after I get back from visiting my parents. Between my birthday and the 4th of July it would just giant PITA.
