Full Dinner?

Hi Ladies, wondering if it is acceptable to serve only heavy appetizers, deserts/cake for an evening ceremony taking place around 7pm?

Thanks!

Yes. We are doing that bc our ceremony doesn't start until 6:30pm. Our reception site is approx 20-30 min away, so butler passed items at first, and then buffet style hors d'oeuvres for the rest of the night. I would be sure to put that in your invites so people know. I put ~hor's doeuvres reception to follow~ on the announcement & then on the reception inserts, I put, please join us for cocktails, hors d'oeuvres & dancing at xxxx xxxxx! HTH

I think that is totally fine, appetizers can be more than filling!

I would suggest pushing ceremony times back to 7:30pm or 8:00pm for an appetizer only reception, especially if your wedding is on a Friday or other weeknight. This way people have time to get home from work, eat dinner, change clothes/get ready, and get to the ceremony on time. On Saturday, I would still suggest a ceremony time of at least 7pm because 6:30pm is really still primo supper time.

I'm inclined to agree with emilykathleen. Personally, I get very grumpy if a wedding is that close to a meal time and I don't get an actual meal. Really, the only weddings where I haven't minded it was an early afternoon wedding with a short reception (they were on a suuuuuper small budget) or a late night Friday wedding (I think the ceremony didn't even start until 8, and then they had laidback cocktail party-style reception afterward.)

I think it would be ok, as long as you had enough appetizers to fill people up, which it sounds like you are planning on that.

We are having lots of food. Veggies, fruit, meat & cheese, shaved turkey and ham sandwiches, martini mashed potatoes, pinwheels, bruschetta, satay chicken. There may be more but I can't remember it all. Bruschetta and satay chicken is going to be butler passed for the first 45 min and then the rest of the food will come out and be refilled over 3 hours for people to enjoy when they want.

We are planning on having a lot of hors d'ouevres so that if people have no eaten they can. It is my dads biggest concern so I know we will have plenty of food. I am not worried about being being angry that its not a sit down meal- it will still be a meal, just different.

We are planning on having a variety of 9 or 10 hors d'ouevres. We are having a food tasting in a couple of weeks to decide what we are going with for sure. Can't wait!!
