Military Brides

Quick Question

Hi ladies,

Just dropping in with a quick question since I know you could best help me. I am Vice President of a student org at my college that serves as a support group for women with SO's in the military. We just got our student org status and this is where I need your help. We want to do a lot of service projects this year and we also need to fundraise so we can do certain things. We are working with our Student Veterans of America group too since they almost disbanded.

My question is what are some service projects you've done that you think would work for us? Also what do you think we could do for fundraising?

Thanks in advance

    • Care packages for Deployed Service Members (All Branches, not just the branch that you're partial too)
    • Party for kids with a Deployed Parent
    • Sponsor a spa day/ Mommy's Day Out for Spouse's with a Deployed Spouse
    • Collect toys to give to kids who've lost a parent or are deployed
    • Work with the Local Veterans Association
    • Visit Veterans at the VA hospital or find Veterans in local retirement home
As for a Fundraiser, Try the usual things like bake sales, change donations, If you're going to sell something, make sure it's not something that Vets, or SM's would find offensive (I know some Vets don't like peace signs...) Candles? Candy Bars? Those little discount cards.

Isecond what SamiJoe said about the community service.

For fundraising try going to the different resturants around town and ask them if they do benefit nights. If people say there are there for your organization you get a percentage of the sale. For my group we would all go out to the resturant, have dinner and then stick around going from table to table telling them to mention our groups name to their server. They don't make a lot of money, but they are easy money.

Car washes also are pretty profitable.

If you do a car wash, make sure it doesn't turn into a peep show as some college/university car washes sometimes do...

Thanks for the help! A car wash isn't an option right now because it's getting cold but you guys have some great ideas. Thanks so much!

That is true. But, funny story... our most profitable car wash happened when it was cold and rainy outside.... I guess people felt bad for us.

In college we did a "Dance-a-thon" (super fun) our grouped danced for 24 hours, in shifts of course.  We also did a "Rock-a-thon" where we rocked in rocking chairs for 24 hours.  We sponsered a 5k on our campus to raise money as well.  We did sales at the flea market and yard sales.

Just let me know if you need the details about any of those things.  I am also an advisor now for a student group so I can get more ideas for you if you need them.

That'd be great! Our school already does a big event called Dance Marathon to benefit a children's hospital but I'd love to hear more of your ideas!

We also have a Big Man on Campus pagent.  It is a pagent for guys.  Trust me the really get into it.  It is run like the Miss America or Miss USA pagents where the guys intro themselves in t-shirts with their org on it.  Each campus org puts in one person.  There is a formal wear, active wear and question part.  It is so funny and everyone loves it.  There is a charge for the tickets and an entry fee.  Local businesses donate gift cards for the winners.  The entire campus is involved.  It raises tons of money.  Just send me a message if you need information about how to get those started.
