Davids bridal freak out-long FYI

im having a minor freak out. I bought a beautiful dress that i loved from davids bridal(there was nothing I didnt love about this dress) well I picked it up from alterations today. It was a HORROR!

First the woman in alterations was no help! she left me and my bridesmaid, sil to get me into my undergarments and my dress(there was no help getting in or out of my dress) when I came out, it seemed my dress was 3 inches to short, cue first mini panic attack. when my sister in law went in search of the woman who was supposed to be helping me she pulled the front of my dress down then told me there was nothing to worry about i would just need my dress to be tugged down for photos the rest of the day! then i asked about taking my dress in(i'm a street size 1 or 2 and have lost some weight due to stress. keeping weight on since i bought my dress has been challenging) she told me it was normal to have to be pulling my dress up.

At this point, my sil asked to take a pic of me in my dress for my other in laws, and the woman helping me walked away not to return for another 20 MINUTES! the only reason she returned is cause my sil went and tracked her down again. She acted like we were intruding because we wanted to know how where the wrist loop for my dress was and how to work it(i opted to go without) and then asking if my appoinment was done. after she hastily said yes she scurried away leaving me and my sil to get me out of my dress. We then had to wait around for her to show up so i could sign the form saying i picked up my dress. walking out into the lobby the store was DEAD! the consultant who helped me find my dress even walked up to me and introduced herself to my fiance and sil. by the time we got home from the two hour drive i was in near tears.

I put on the dress for my mom(whose been hemming and fixing my clothes for years) doesnt know if well be able to fix my dress from rolling up when i walk down the aisle. or where we will take my dress to get it taken in if i continue to loose weight(we live in a small town without dress shops and we dont know where an official seamstress is)

Am I freaking out over nothing? i was so pleased with davids bridal until now! the bottom of my dress is uneven, and rolls up when i walk in it!

Re: Davids bridal freak out-long FYI

  • Did you try posting on your local board for a good independent seamstress to take your dress in for a second opinion?  I have heard bad things on these boards about David's Bridal's alterations that they are overpriced and don't give good service, so you're not the only one.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Sounds shady to me.  If your dress is too short, there is nothing alterations can do about that.  I'd ask them to order you in another dress.  One of my friends bought a dress from David's, and they had to reorder her one because it came in with a huge waterstain on it.  Sounds to me like the QC at a store who sells as many units as David's is lacking, as is their customer service.  I'd also ask around on your local board for independent seamstresses, or call the next closest bridal store and ask for their recommendations.  Sorry to hear you are having such a problem!

OMG everyone is always posting horrible things on here about David's! I'm so sorry about your experience. I would make them order you a new dress! That is ridiculoud. I also agree with PP and try and post on a local board. I would at least look into finding a good seamstress in your area, but like PP said I'm not sure what can be done about a dress that is too short. Good luck!

  • Are you wearing heels? One solution is to wear flats or a lower heel.  You can also take out any tulle or "poofy" parts under the dress to make it lay flater and lower.

I would call the manager and complain, and hopefully get some money back. Definitely go to a second seamstress- you should NOT be pulling on your dress all night and it should be fitted to your body.

  • Davids bridal is the worst.

Start sweet and ask them to order you a new dress, but you might end up having to make noise.

But you shouldn't have to wear that nightmare.

Also, having to keep pulling your dress up is not normal.  It should stay in place if it's fitted correctly.
  • Am I understanding correctly that you got your dress altered at DB?  Their alterations department does guarantee the quality of their alterations (clicky), so if they have altered it to a point where it cannot be fixed (ie, too short), they should provide you with a whole new dress.

Call the manager, tell her your alterations are unacceptable and you need a new dress immediately so that you have time to get it altered elsewhere (also get back whatever you paid for alterations), go all the way up to corporate if you need to and threaten to report to the BBB.  Get a new dress, and then take it to an independent seamstress (check your local board for recommendations).

DB customer service is hit or miss depending on their location, but I've heard universally bad things about their alterations and we always recommend using a independent seamstress on this board.  Sorry you have to deal with this.

  • You need to take you dress back into the store and speak with a store manager. Tell them your conceerns, more often than not they are willing to work with you to rectify the situation. If that doesn't work elevate it to a DM, and perhaps corporate level.
  • I would have NEVER walked out of that store with that dress in it's unacceptable condition.  I think the alterations woman knew better than it being okay to tug down the dress for pictures, and pulling it up all day because it doesn't fit well, she just wanted you out of her hair.  The woman needs to be fired.

I'd call the store manager so they can get you a new dress.
  • I would be VERY upset and ask for the dress to be reordered - then I would find a seamstress in reasonable distance to you to make any and all alterations.  Just my advice if you have the time.
  • unfortunatly, i bought the sample sale dress because it would be cutting it close to the wedding date to order the dress. thank you for all the support! it was a very frustrating trying day and i needed to hear from other brides that i need to get my dress fixed. i was feeling like my sil was trying to placate me yesterday while i was freaking out. my older sister did recomend holding off o taking my dress in till closer to the wedding. she went through a similar situation with loosing weight got her dress altered then had to squeeze into an uncomfortable dress after she gained it back.
  • Ugh that really stinks.

I got my dress at DB too and have also had a great experience up until today.  The FG's mom got an email saying her dress was in and my mom and I hadn't heard anything about mine or my MOHs so she called them and its there.  They couldn't tell us for how long but didn't we get the e-mal letting us know?

Turns out they had the wrong e-mail address and didn't think to call myself or my mom both whose contact info they have!  They should have called us once it was there for a week and they hadn't heard anything!!

  • I have had no issues with the actual purchase of my dress. But based on the issues I have read on here, I am not and will not go to their alterations. I only need a bustle and maybe taken in a bit at the bust, but that's all and I still believe davids could screw it up lol.

  • Do you have pics of you in the dress after the alterations?

I think in another comment you mention it was too close to the wedding date to order another. My thoughts:

If you're truly unhappy with the dress and the service, don't wear it. Work with them to get what you wanted, or maybe go elsewhere? That sounds like such a stressful option to me =/

If you're willing to work with it, though, could you...
    - play up your shoes? I want red shoes and was even toying with the idea of a *slightly* shorter hem to show them off a bit.
    - add fabric to the bottom of the dress (might work best if there are already layers, though)
    - like  matcha mentioned, remove fabric from the dress to make it a bit longer by reducing the volume?
    - what is the back like? If it's a zipper/button, could you replace it with a corset? You might be able to take out some fabric to accommodate for the smaller size, and then lace it up as tightly as you need.

I haven't bought my dress yet, but my top pick so far is a DB. Now I'm a bit concerned, at least about alterations there.
