Place Cards or Not?

My fiance' and I are disagreeing on the escort cards for the wedding. Our wedding is small (about 50), but on the larger side for a destination  wedding. I've already bought most of the supplies to the cards, but my fiance' doesn't think we should do them.

To the other brides out there who are having smaller weddings - are you doing escort cards or no??

We had 51 people and did a poster where we listed table assignments. Seating at the table was open. Worked out great for us and ensured no awkward run-ins but still gave a little flexibility to arrange themselves. It also saved us the hassle of trying to come up with a wind-proof alternative.

I think for a wedding with that amount of guests, you could be better off having the seating assignments listed somewhere (like on a chalkboard or printed up in a list form) than doing actual cards, unless you are really stuck on the card idea. We had about 125 guests and did cards with table assignments but they could sit wherever they wanted at the table. Then we didn't have to worry about the wind factor.

We are having 22 guests at one long table and will have cards.  The reason is that we want to sit in the middle on one side and have our children sit on each side of us, so it really was the only way to make sure that would happen.  As far as where the other guests sit not really partial.

We are assigning tables only, thereby our guests can sit where they like.

FSForever, have you thought about making reserved signs for the chairs that way no one will sit where you don't want them to and your other guests can sit where where they like?

@Maui 2011, I have and probably will go that way too but now that I am adding the "sea stars" I am out of control with DIY projects. LOL Will probably have both.

LOL - FSForever, I also went a bit crazy with DIY details!  We ended up with both placecards and escort cards... and our wedding only had about 30-ish ppl!  :)

We wanted assigned seating, because of meal selections.  Some guests had severe food allergies and that way, the servers would know where they were seated in advance.  We could have done with just placecards, but I added the escort cards more as welcome table decor (had a neat DIY idea for it)....  Our guests liked the details and even took all their personalized cards home as souvenirs.  :)

If it's too much work, I wouldn't worry about it (just a minor detail).  But if you already have ideas for them and bought supplies, I figure, why not?  It doesn't hurt to help guide guests to their tables, so they can get seated quickly.  HTH!  :)

Thanks for all your input! I was just planning on having the escort tags (with starfish) assigning people to a table, but they can then decide where to sit from there. My fiance thinks it's fine to just let people pick their own seats, but then again he's in the "keep it simple" mindset. I think that would be more of a headache for guests. Plus, I love these kinds of projects :)

Glad to hear that other smaller weddings still had table assignments. I'm doing it (especially since I already bought the supplies)!!

Like Fabutan, we used the place settings to mark guests' meal choices (white = fish, red=meat [FI had combo, so he had both coloursSmile]). We had fun table names, and we did a big framed seating chart so people knew which table they were at as well.
