Readings?

Our Pastor gave us a list of suggested order of ceremony for our wedding day.  He left a spot for readings. We already planned to have him read the normal Corinthians Bible passage during the ceremony, but are now thinking that maybe we would mayble like FI's sister to do a non-religious reading as well.

For those of you planning readings during your ceremony (other then Bible readings) can you share what you will be using?

Thanks so much!  Time is flying isnt it??

Re: Readings?

  • We are doing E.E. Cummings "I carry your heart".
    Anniversary
  • Our Love by Kahlil Gibran
you were born together, and together you shall be forevermore.
You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.
Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of god.
But let there be spaces in your togetherness,
and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:
let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.
Fill each other's cup but drink not from one cup.
Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf
sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,
even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.
Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping.
For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.
And stand together yet not too near together:
for the pillars of the temple stand apart,
and the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow.

  • We're doing a pretty non-traditional reading that probably wouldn't fly in some circles, but it's meaningful to me and to some of my friends who are in the wedding.

Marriage is a vital social institution. The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family. Because it fulfills yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life's momentous acts of self-definition.

It is undoubtedly for these concrete reasons, as well as for its intimately personal significance, that civil marriage has long been termed a 'civil right.' Without the right to choose to marry, one is excluded from the full range of human experience.”

It's from the 2003 Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision that made gay marriage legal in Massachusetts. We live in NYC but are having our wedding in Indiana. Most of my close friends from college are gay, and I really liked this quote since it talks about how important it is for EVERYONE to have the right to get married (without being too political or preachy...)
  • Thank you for the responses!

  • We're having two readings one from Captain Corelli's Mandolin and a biblical one that starts out "arise my love." Sorry, I'm tired and too lazy to look them up right now.

  • We are having FIs step mom read an Irish Blessing as my family is Irish and we want to incorporate my heritage in the ceremony.

May your mornings bring joy and your evenings bring peace.

May your troubles grow few as your blessings increase.
May the saddest day of your future
Be no worse than the happiest day of your past.
May your hands be forever clasped in friendship
And your hearts joined forever in love.
    Your lives are very special,
God has touched you in many ways.
May his blessings rest upon you
And fill all your coming days.
We swear by peace and love to stand,
Heart to heart and hand to hand.
Hark, O Spirit, and hear us now,
    Confirming this our Sacred Vow.

  • Maybe...We are supposed to meet the wrong people before meeting the right one so that, when we finally meet the right person, we will know how to be grateful for that gift Maybe...it is true that we don't know what we have got until we lose it, but it is also true that we don't know what we have been missing until it arrives Maybe...the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way Maybe...the best kind of love is the kind you can sit on a sofa together and never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation you've ever had Maybe...you shouldn't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Maybe...you should hope for enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, and enough hope to make you happy Maybe... Love is not about finding the perfect person, it's about learning to see an imperfect person perfectly.'   I really love this wedding because it fits is so perfectly.
