We sent out STD to all of our guests in August for our March 26, 2010 wedding. My question is: Do we send out the invitations 6-8 weeks before the wedding or 6-8 weeks before the reply card is requested back? We are requesting all replies by March 5, 2010.
Re: Invitation timeline question
Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
Many say it's 6-8 weeks before the wedding, BUT, the checklist on here just changed to say invites go out at 3 months prior to the event:
"Start addressing wedding invitations or drop them off with the calligrapher (you'll need to send them out at the three-month mark)."
"At three months out, send your wedding invitations (be sure to add extra postage for overseas guests)."
(I totally bucked tradition and sent mine out 4 months before the wedding)
For me I sent early because I didn't do save-the-dates and half of my guest list is in Canada. I didn't want to wait until after the New Year to send the invites (which would have only left them 2 months to save for the trip and make travel plans) and I didn't want to send them right before Christmas. We're doing all the decorating and food ourselves, so it was also important for me to have a head-count pretty early.
I've seen a lot of posts on here about hotels and caterers needing reservations/head counts as far as 2-3 months before the wedding, so that may be part of the Knot's reasoning.
We did send some earlier than the 8 week point as I recall because a few were going out of the country. Keep that in mind if you may need to get some to Canada or overseas. Even my cousins in Bermuda mention that the postal service from the Eastern US is two weeks min.
