DIY Help Needed!

I've been trying to find some unique place card holders that I could use and found these great sea shell place card holders over at etsy!  Only problem is, the seller said the her sea shell supplier is out of stock of the shells she needs and I can't find any others that I really like and are not $$$$!

I'm pretty good at diy stuff, but need help figuring out what the best way is to make the slits that the place cards would sit on.  Does any one have any experience making these themselves or have any ideas how I can make the slit without shattering the shell?

Here's a photo of the ones I like (sorry the pic's kind of small):

I bought some discountinued shells very similar to these a Michaels. We are going to use them as table decor and hang them off of the end of the table runner. FI was able to drill through them so I am thinking you may be able to use a masonry saw if you know someone who has one.  FI said the best way to make sure they didn't break was to drill at the thickest part from the outside of the shell, on the ones you could see both sides, but not sure it would matter if you were sawing them.

Hmmm I don't think my FI has a saw but i'll go checkout home depot and do a test run!  I'm assuming these things have to be somewhat easy to make?! *crossing fingers*  I see a lot of them, but I really liked how these shells are a little bigger and painted with pearly white/glittery paint!

Well if you can find the shells that you like then I suggest picking up a dremel tool <---- clicky and then purchase a circular cutting blade <--- clicky and then getting some test shells and grinding/cutting a slit where the cards can go?  Good luck, keep us posted on how it turns out.

<div>Motolyn, I didn't even think about the dremel.  FI has one of those and uses it for everything.  I think he just likes me asking to do a task so he can go by another "part" for it. </div><div>
</div><div>Please be careful.  FI took a piece of scrap wood and made a holder so he wouldn't drill a finger or his hand. I can only imagine a saw. </div>
