Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Re: Sample Sale

  • Yes.
I hated my dress as soon as I got home.  Then I saw a seamstress and had it totally remade into my own gown.   I'm very happy with my decision as I was able to buy a high end silk gown that I would not have been able to afford otherwise.

  • If you can wear the sample size, DO IT!!!  You can save significantly even if minor repairs are needed.  I got a $350 gown marked down to $99.  Good as new after a $30 dry cleaning, although it was missing the panel under the corset which I think cost about $40 for the seamstress to replace it.  The other alterations of course were things that would have had to be done anyway.  I almost got an $850 gown marked down to $425 which was in excellent shape and wouldn't have needed any repairs.  At another salon I saw dresses in the $2,000 range which were marked down half the price.  Just check the gown carefully for any damage that you don't think a cleaner's or seamstress could fix, and ask the associates at the salon how much the seamstress would charge for any repairs you would need.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

  • I got my dress at a sample sale. It was busy and it was drop in (no appointment needed) so I had to wait about 10 minutes before a consultant was assigned to me, which was fine. She looked at the dresses available in my size with me and pulled the ones I was interested in trying on. She also brought me more as I was getting into those ones since none of them turned out to be it.

I went in not expecting to find anything but dress number 7 was it. I had to pay for it in full that day (it was 50% off the retail price) and took it with me. So it's hanging in a closet at my Dad's until it's time for alterations.

  • I got mine at a sample sale for almost 50% off the regular price. There are very few things wrong with it: missing buttons (I'm short - so we can take some from the bottom), loose embroidered detail, a few missing gems, and its a little dirty. All of this can be fixed for much less than what it would have cost to get a new gown.

So it's good because you can find a good deal, but as the pp said, make sure to inspect it and evaluate what kind of repairs it would need. In my case, it was definitely worth it. I LOVE my dress and cut my budget for it in half.

  • Mine is a sample dress on clearance at the boutique I went to. I absolutely love it, got it for $500 off the original $1350. There's a few loose beads and a button that needs to be fixed, but otherwise it's in great condition, and those are easy fixes that even I could do. It's totally worth looking at sample sales, and even check the smaller boutiques (you'll still want an appointment probably) because they might have a clearance rack for discontinued styles, like mine did.

  • Boncy boutique has some dresses that are knockoffs, so I'm thinking about trying a few on in the store and then ordering online.  What was your experience with boncy?
