Winter Wedding Question

I like that I'm having a February wedding - that being said there is a HUGE elephant in the room and that is the potential of a snowstorm.  My question is for people who have had snow month weddings - did you put writing in the contract of your vendors in case the wedding needed to be cancelled due to bad weather?

Re: Winter Wedding Question

  • I doubt that any vendors will put a refund into their contract due to weather. It would usually be their standard cancellation policy. If its a really bad storm that basically shuts down everything, they may work with you, but some vendors just have to be paid (florists, for example - but they may be willing to just charge you the cost of the flowers though). I would just ask them what their policy is on weather related cancellations.
  • I'm getting married in early December, so I'm not too worried about snow, but weather that can cause your wedding to be postponed can happen any time of the year. I know for hurricane Irene weddings, vendors were happy to reschedule for your new wedding date if they were available. We didn't put any extra language in. We did make sure our venue had backup generators etc in case of power loss. Just ask everyone their policy in case of inclement weather. If you are really worried there is wedding insurance, but I don't know anyone who has used it.

  • I had a friend who got married on the day of Irene and decided not to move her wedding. I got married two weeks later and had a hurricane contingency plan in place; our venue said if they lost power I could move my wedding to an upcoming open date. Most vendors had plans- just ask so you can feel comfortable. Honestly, wedding insurance isn't a bad idea in case your venue is picky and won't cooperate... Especially since snow may shut the airport but not the venue.

  • I got married last February 18th and fortunately last winter was really mild, much to my dismay. I really wanted snow on the ground and some snow falling. There was nothing in any of my contracts regarding snow and cancellation. My vendors pretty much told me that they would be there come hell or high water, unless it was a state emergancy situation snowstorm. We also did not have wedding insurance. My wedding was at a hotel so I was pretty confident things would be ok (back up generators and such) but I tend to under react to things.
My suggestion is do what you are comfortable with. If you want it in your contracts or want to discuss it with your vendors, go for it. Atleast you will know their policies and can make a more informed decision. If insurance will make you feel more secure, then invest in it. This is your day, make sure it's exactly what you want so you can enjoy it stress free.
  • I'm getting married on January 19th and have the same fear - No one I've met with said they would refund/ change the date if the weather is bad however they were all concerned abot it as well. My hall, The Grand Marquis said that if it is bad they WILL cancel for the safty of their employees and my guests and I can reschedule for an open date in the future - but that doesnt cover vendors. My suggestion (being an insurance agent) Take out an event insurance policy!!!
For what your paying for your wedding soup to nuts its a small price to pay for piece of mind!  Put it this way, your wedding will not be "cancelled" due to the weather, it will be "postponed" and then its on you to cover the loss/ additonal costs to you vendors, get new flowers ect - also sometimes offer to help for out of town guests who might now have addional costs (personally, not great aunt susie, but possibly grandma). Its alot - event insurance will cover you so you have the money to re-book everything you have to so you can still have your perfect day. You can google it and also check out Wedsafe.com and Travelers.com.
Good luck to you, me and all of us other crazy winter brides!!!
