Rehearsal dinner mandatory?! I need ideas!

My wedding party is small- just myself, my older sister, and my two young cousins (junior BM, and FG- ages 9 &4). My fiancé only has himself and his best man. Now, our families aren't that close to eachother, my fiancé and his family live two hours away! I want to do a rehearsal dinner, but being we're getting married on a sunday- the venue isn't available the night before for this. Are there any alternative ideas that might be fun?

Re: Rehearsal dinner mandatory?! I need ideas!

  • Are you having a rehearsal?  If so, what night?  I'd recommend having a rehearsal on Saturday night at another location.  There really is no reason to rehearse at the location if it's not available.  We didn't rehearse for our own wedding and I was a MOH a few years ago where we rehearsed in a hotel conference room.  Both weddings went perfectly :-)

If you aren't having a rehearsal, then a dinner isn't necessary.  The dinner is to thank you party for taking time out of their life to come to your rehearsal.  No rehearsal = no rehearsal dinner.

However, if you still want a dinner, go for it.  It doesn't matter that the key people don't know each other.  This means that there will plenty to talk about over a nice meal!
  • A rehearsal dinner is only mandatory if there is a rehearsal. Do you think you'll need a rehearsal? If not, skip it.

As pp said, you can still have a dinner, though.

  • After reading Vanessa's post, I had a related question.  My venue is also not available the night before the wedding.  We just found this out, so we're scrambling trying to figure out where else to rehearse.  Here's my question:

Since we can't get in for rehearsal or decorating the night before, on the morning of, should we do a quick run through after we finish the decorations?  At the actual venue, we'll have platforms for our wedding party to stand on, where as we may not have anything like that where ever we end up rehearsing the night before.  Thoughts??
