Father of the Bride

I'm watching this movie on TBS at the moment (the newer one), and I kind of want to smack all of the characters. They're paying $250 per person just for the food and booze and the guest list right now is at 527!! !?! That's a crap ton of money. Also Steve Martin keeps telling them to invite all 527 to the church but no more than 150 can come to the reception. Also, they're all just really really whiny. Too much money, you don't like my FI, I hate the wedding coordinator, you're too stingy, that's an ugly cake, you're too stingy, his parents are too rich, you're too stingy, etc.

I don't think I've seen this movie since before I got married. Anyone else feel this way?  The original with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor was way better, at least in that one the super traditional roles were more expected.

Re: Father of the Bride

  • I just turned it on, but it's already at the sappy ending part where he's reminiscing about his little girl growing up.
  • I dont know...I think the whole ridiculousness of the movie is what makes it funny and endearing.
  • And their house is gorgeous!
  • I just turned it on a few minutes ago... those bridesmaids dresses are HIDEOUS!

  • I love that movie :( But not as much as I love FOB part 2
  • I love those movies. I don't think it's supposed to be taken seriously.
  • H doesn't understand when I say "I need a Fraanc".  Maybe I should make him watch the movies...

  • Father of the Bride just ended... and is immediately followed by MEAN GIRLS!

  • "Don't have sex, or you will get pregnant and die."

I'm pretty sure that's what my sex ed. class was like too.

  • My mom and I used to watch part 2 together all the time. I can quote pretty much the entire movie.
  • I love that movie, but I do think it is very unrealistic. Annie is a spoiled princess. loved the sequel.

  • I thought the sequel was terrible. There are some cute parts in the first movie, specifically when she tells him she's getting married and he pictures her as a little girl, but I haven't seen it in forever.

I remember when the brother said his friend can come and won't eat and Steve Martin said, "Brilliant! Who else can we ask not to eat?" And how he wants to have the wedding at the Steak Pit.

  • My dad always loves how he says "A cake, Franc, is made of flour and water." and Franc's "welcome to the 90's Mr. Bonks." Going nuts and stealing hot dog buns - ah, hilarious.

I don't get how that wedding could be $250 a head when they're having the cheaper chicken in their back yard.

  • Of course it's not realistic, it's Hollywood.
  • It's meant to be over the top. It's a movie. That's what makes it so great. =) My dad keeps telling me he's going to wear his old 70's tux and dance down the aisle to Tom Jones!

Once you add all the rentals for linens, china, crystal, etc.  I can see it easily being $250 a head.

  • I think it's hilariously funny.  It's EXACTLY the inner monologue that goes through so many people's heads.  Even what we post on here, sometimes.  He just says it out loud.  I love that movie.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • Sorry I ran away :) I certainly don't hate the movie, I just never noticed how whiny they were before. I still like the original better, but there are certainly some funny parts in this one.

I also tend to be that person that's like "Dude that would NEVER happen, this movie is dumb" a lot. Sometimes H and I have to remind each other it's just a movie and chill. Other times it's really fun to judge people as if they were real so I can feel better about myself. "Man am I glad I'm not THAT whiny."
