My fiance is lovely. He bought this amazing Brooks Brothers suit for our wedding. I swoon every time I see him in it.

I'm a very ungirly girl. I dress up occasionally, but don't own a single cocktail dress. I hate dressing up. I hate spending money on clothes. I hate being super formal; it feels like I'm in costume.

My plan thus far has been to sew a dress. I'm partly through. It's very playful and me and pink and flowy and a good tone for our wedding (10 people under a cherry tree, literally). However, sewing is hard and I also don't want to look silly. If my dress comes out awesome, great. I'll enjoy wearing something I made. But if it doesn't work out I have until April to buy something that feels like ME getting married.

I just feel really angsty about this and wanted to tell the universe. I told him too and he wants me to make/buy/do whatever I want. :-) he's lovely.

You can find a bridemaid dress in ivory if you don't want something super formal. DB has a great casual collection, you should schedule an appointment so you can try on some simple cute dresses. You're not the only bride that doesn't want a big huge ball gown.

Trying to find a bridesmaid dress was actually really frustrating. Most of the shops in town (and I live in Seattle!) didn't have much in-stock selection of bridesmaid dresses and even couldn't get many in trunk shows. I tried 3-4 shops before I gave up and wasted a ton of time.

I think I'll end up going the custom dress route. It's the emotional piece that's sucking. Thanks, though.

Awww. Well you're welcome. Good Luck. What about department store dresses? Do you have a JcPenney's / Nordstroms / Macys / Sears close by? There used to be a Jessica McClintock outlet close to me and my sister's wedding dress was like $65.

Stage's suggestion was also good.

Good luck, OP. I'd try going custom. That's exactly what I did. I had my heart set on a very simple silhouette in all white seersucker. No one made that so I had it made. I loved the final product and it was way, way less stressful than trying to sew my own!

If you need help getting started finding a seamstress, go to the nearest big city and look up luxury fabric stores and then ask the owner/manager if they have any seamstresses that they recommend. You'll get pointed in the direction of the sorts of people that ladies who customarily have dresses made use.
