When to do taste testing??

Our reception is going to be at a country club that is going to include the food and cake in our package. How soon should we be planning out the menu? The wedding will be May 19th, 2012, so we are almost at the 5 month mark. The wedding coordinator of the country club didn't tell us too much other than don't do it too early. I was thinking maybe around the 3-4 month mark, but wanted to see what you other brides thought/did.
Thanks in advance!

It depends on where you go...some places require you to do it 6-8 months in advance, while others require just 2.  We're getting married in April and are doing our cake tasting next Sunday.

We are getting married in July and just did our tasting.  Our venue doesn't have a contract with a bakery though, so to ensure we got the bakery we wanted for our date we needed to book early.  I also wanted to make sure I got 2011 pricing.

We did ours 10 months out, but that was only because we lived OOT and that was the only time we could get up there.

I think you are at a good spot for doing the tasting now.  Especially if you have plans for people picking their food on an RSVP card or you are going menus.  You need to know what you are serving before you place the paper order.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Ditto PP that we had our tasting about 7 months about because we were planning OOT. We didn't finalize the menu (such as choosing the appetizers) until a couple weeks out. That was fine with our caterer, as the deadline was 7 days in advance of the event.

If I were you, I would schedule the testing soon, and finalize the menu in the next month. This way, if you're offering choices, you know before sending out the invites (about 3 month mark). Ask the caterer if you will be able to make changes after the final selection and to what extent. For example, you may fall in love with the chocolate cake and select all tiers to be chocolate. But then a couple months later you decide you want more variety and want a layer of yellow. Will they be able to accomodate you?
