First Earthquake

Hey everyone!

I just experienced my first ever earthquake. I live in Virginia!

There was a 5.8 earthquake in Richmond and it was felt all the way to Pittsburgh.

Hope all you east coasters are safe.

    Haha.

I couldn't believe it. I was on the second floor of my school setting up my classroom. I heard rumbling before I felt it. Then all of a sudden the walls started to shake and the school was swaying back and forth.

My TV almost fell from the wall.

I felt it here in NC..everything in my bank started rattling and shaking. It was my first earthquake too! My FSIL had to evacuate her work building up in NYC. That's crazy!

I went to college in DC, so most of my friends are still there, and they're all bursting onto Facebook to announce their earthquake experiences!  Meanwhile, all the college buddies who moved to LA are belittling the experience, calling it an "earth fart" or something silly and ridiculous.

It's rather entertaining.  And here my parents were freaking out about me being in the path of a Cat 4 hurricane! (Yesterday morning it was a Cat 1 and headed south of us arriving on Thursday, then last night it was a Cat 3 and headed straight at us for Friday morning, and now it's a Cat 4 and headed northeast of us... we'll see what they say tomorrow and Thursday!)

Yeah I get what your friends in LA are saying but hey, give east coast some credit, we never get earthquakes (or very rarely at the most) so it's big news here :) And this hurricane, it better not ruin my weekend plans :) I hope you're safe down in Florida Cali!

Haha!!! I was (still am) sitting at work doing some computer work.  I had felt one when I had gone to see H in Japan last year (around this time actually) so I knew right away what it was, and that it probably didn't cause any damage.. I work in like a strip mall/office park and someone from another office came in and was like "DID YOU FEEL THAT?!!? OMG!! ARE YOU OKAY? I HAVE TO CALL MY FAMILY" I just sat here very calmly.  My computer monitor was shaking and I could feel it in my feet cause I had them firmly planted on the floor.  It was kind of cool, and made all the better in that there was no damage, and no one was hurt.

Although I did immediately email C & GG to see if they felt it!! haha

Once while I was visiting the San Diego zoo, we were in the insects/bees/creepy crawly room, and a 6.somethin' hit as I was standing near the bees, that not 2 seconds prior, a zoo employee freaked out because some kid was rattling the glass, and kept saying the bees will freak and bust out. Well, all I could think about was a massive bee escape after that huge quake. And that, my friends, is a quake experience! LOL I totally wish I didn't live in quake country

I move to CA and haven't experienced and earthquake in the year I've been here. In the 22 years I lived in PA we never felt an earthquake. Now my mom is getting told to go home from work cause of an earthquake near my home town. What the heck!?

Are they normal around in that area? We're moving to VA soon, so I'd like to be ready for it. lol H and I experienced quite a bit in Japan this year, they were all just after shocks but even then it would still be between 5-8 magnitude. Sometimes I'm sleeping alone at home, and an earthquake would wake me up from sleep, our bed would be shaking. Or I would be in our tv room, and the couch and tv would just start shaking! I guess it didn't help that we live on the 5th floor there! But at least we weren't there for the BIG quake, a lot of people were traumatized by that.

No, they rarely ever happen in the East Coast, and when they do they're barely noticeable.  I remember one from when I was a child - around 13 or 14 years old - and it sounded like a basketball hit the side of the house but that was it.  That's the only one I ever remember.

Thanks C! When we lived in CA, we were right by the fault and there would be quakes there too but I don't remember ever really feeling them because they were so small.

Kara- I've lived either in Pittsburgh or DC my whole life and this is my first. It wasn't huge and only did minor damage but it was 5.8. We had to evacuate but everyone is fine. We had a tiny after shock. My dog sensed before the after shock came. He was passed out and all of a sudden jumped to alert and 10 seconds later I heard it and then the house started shaking

It was felt in Ohio, Chicago, Wisconsin, and parts of Canada! It was weird! I work on the top floor of an old bldg and felt it!

Supposedly people in Canada felt some tremors from it. I'm in CT but didn't feel anything, just about everyone else I know did though.

I'm use to them by now, but I am in Japan.  Lived through the devasting one on March 11, 2011 and all the after shocks.  At least they aren't too bad now to knock out the power.  Only difference between the ones we feel in Japan and on the East Coast is the Japanese build for these, the East Coast doesn't since it obviously isn't a normal occurence.
