Veil length?

What's the best way to determine the length of the veil?  We're making my dress, and I'm probally going to make the veil.  I've tried on several lengths, and I don't trust my opinion of how I look in them.  I don't want to wait until the dress is done because then I'll be rushing to do the veil.  Any advice?

Re: Veil length?

  • It's really just a matter of what you like the look of best with your dress. There is no formula to picking the right veil. I've seen people do bird cage, finger tip, and shoulder length veils with my dress. It really all depends on what style you're going for and some veils just don't look right with certain dresses. Without seeing your dress it's hard to say, just try on different styles with it.
  • If you could post a picture, that would help. I personally think if your dress has a long train with a lot of detail, you should do a shorter veil to not compete with the train. If the train is shorter or your dress is simple, you could do a cathedral length. A good stopping point if you are going shorter is where detail starts on your dress (that's why I said a picture would help). I had my veil made and we stopped the veil at the end of the buttons on the back.
  • Well, there's not really a pattern for it, but this is basicly it:

The dress design it's based on is one that was made by a friend for a character of hers (and yes, i have permission to use it).  That design had a long veil, just above floor length, though it didn't have the jacket.  The jacket will be white satin with a design on the breast, the corset is white satin with a silver brocade panel in front, the skirt is white satin, and the gray drape is this silver-thread-accented white silk that shimmers in the light.  I do have the veil material in mind that I'd like to use, and we're planning a day to go over to the wholesale district and find the applique or lace for the bottom of it, but I just can't figure out what length would look best on that and me.  My body shape is a slightly tall pear shape (about a size 14), if that helps too.  /><

  • Id personally go with a very simple veil elbow lenghth. Theres a lot going on starting at your waist you don't want to compete with
