Cake!

We are going for our cake tasting in a week. I am so ridiculously excited!

What is a cake tasting like? Do bakeries typically have certain ones you can select from? Should I bring our flower colors? How did you select your cake? Which flavor(s) did you choose? My mother is saying I should do a cannoli cake because I love cannolis, but I'm thinking I should go with more of a crowd-pleaser like vanilla with chocolate layers.

Re: Cake!

  • We did cupcakes, so I just had to go multiple times on the days they were selling the flavors we were interested in. We picked lemon, strawberry, and amaretto.

  • How the tasting is conducted depends on the bakery.  There are multiple ways to approach it.

Our baker brought samples of the 5 types of cake she made, and the two types of frosting she offered.  We picked 3 flavors (pumpkin with maple cream, cookies and cream, and salted caramel with chocolate cream).

We met at a Starbucks, but a larger baker might have a shop or facility to meet you at instead.  Our wedding was small, so we didn't need a large corporate baker.

  • The shop we're getting our cake from has two store fronts, so we did our tasting in one of their stores. They brought us six small pieces of different cakes for us to try. They were all very different to givre us an idea of the different kinds of cake they offer. We didn't bring our flower colors or anything, but we did sit down with the catering manager to talk about our colors and theme. We'll go back a few weeks before the wedding to settle on our final flavors and design.

Have fun! Cake tasting has probably been my favorite part of the process so far!

<div>Like PP said, it depends on the bakery how they conduct a tasting. Basically yes, you will taste a variety of flavors of cake, fillings, and frostings. Depending how much cake you will need, you can have more than one flavor...</div><div>
</div><div>You can bring reference pictures for the design aspect, so colors are a good start. If you have an idea or picture of a cake that you like then bring it to show the baker what you're envisioning. Also, if you have a cake topper or know that you're going to purchase one, then include that too.</div><div>
</div><div>You will also need to know how many servings you will need (based on your guest count) to determine the size of the cake (i.e. how many tiers, etc.)</div><div>
</div><div>I WISH I COULD HAVE ORDERED A CANOLI CAKE!!!! But in my area you are lucky to find a decent Italian bakery at all, let alone a baker that offers canoli! Seriously, I'm having my Italian wedding cookies and canoli shipped in from Pittsburgh (where my family is from) a few days before the wedding. </div><div>
</div><div>Enjoy yourself and try to pick at least two different flavors. </div><div>
</div><div>Oh, and remember... if you hit a cake wall (i.e. too rich to finish) it's probably a sign that your guests will do the same and you'll end up with half eaten servings. IMO that's a waste of money! Good luck.</div>

  • @Addie, I LOVE cupcakes. I don't know why, but I think they always taste better than cake. I always thought I'd do a cupcake cake tower, but my fiance isn't a fan. It's not really a hill to die on for me.

@Brita, I'm not sure I could ever hit a cake wall. I loooove cake.

I hope we can do two or more flavors like some of you did. That would be great! Then I can get my cannoli cake, and do some more plain flavors. I don't think I've been to a wedding with multiple flavors before. If I remember correctly, we typically see the bride and groom cut the cake and within a few minutes a slice appears at our seat.

We expect about 120 guests to come. The bakery is a rather large one in the area, and they have a separate location for tastings.

[QUOTE]Our baker met us at a Starbucks, too.  We also did cupcakes, so she brought about 8 flavors for us to sample with different icing ideas.  She also asked for a picture of my dress and the bridesmaid dresses to try to coordinate the colors and styles. Ours later had the idea to make cupcake bouquets.   Here's how they turned out --

Wow! Those are fantastic! <3 <3
  • We did 4 cake tastings.  YUM.  At each place they gave us about 5 or 6 different flavors to try.  It was delicious.  Then we picked the place we loved best and then the flavor we liked best from that place.  We had cupcakes but they were all one flavor.
  • I'm setting up cake tastings too!  I contacted two bakeries that were recommended by several of the vendors we're working with.  One asked us to pick from their menu 6 combinations we want to try.  The other will provide us with their choices for tasting.  My FI and I have very different opinions of what makes a good cake, so coming to a decision we're both happy with is going to be difficult, but hopefully fun/tasty too.
  • Our venue has a pastry chef we have to use (or else we're charged a ridiculous amount, but she's great so no complaints!) and we're super bummed because we have to pay to have cakes made in order to taste them. So we're just going with something crowd-pleasing, like vanilla with lemon curd and buttercream frosting.
