what to do about a registry

we have been living together for a while now and have everything we need.. and i mean everything lol. so my problem is that i dont want to register for a bunch of stuff i dont need, and dont have room for, but people are pushing for gift ideas.
another thing is that we are saving to buy a house so i told my parents that if they wanted to give anything that money for the house fund would be helpful which they were happy about. but i dont want to tell other people that in fear of seeming rude.. any ideas?

Re: what to do about a registry

  • Asking for cash in any form is rude. But what you could do is make a very small registry with only a few items. People will see it and either give you gift cards or cash.

  • I agree with VK.  Are most of your guests local?  You could register at a home improvement store or something so the gift cards you get will at least go towards fixing up that home you want (if it needs fixing).  That might also help get guests to realize that you're focusing on purchasing a home and clue them in to the $$ idea.

You can register for items that you want to upgrade like towels, bedding, pots and pans, glasses, barware, even new utensils, maybe new decor items for your home like candles, votive holders. I would also check out Macys registry checklist. They have so many things on there that I wouldn't have even thought about. Crate and Barrel also has a registry check list.

  • You could also register for your honeymoon :-)  I think some people prefer to give gifts so making a small registry would be best.
  • I'm in the same boat, and asked the same question a few weeks ago.  Basically, we're going through everything we could upgrade.  Like, the dishes could be upgraded.  The silverware, towels, sheets, etc.  We'll give away or get rid of the things that we are replacing. I'm also thinking about attachments for my kitchen aid, and things for him, like an outdoor smoker or a fire pit... A dyson?  New luggage, etc.  I went to the Kohl's website and started looking around and adding things I'd want.  Same at BB&B and maybe Crate&Barrel or Pier1.  You find that your wants are ever growing anyway.

  • I think we'll register to upgrade a few household items to create a 'traditional' registry and then like PP mentioned register at a home improvement store (prob. Lowes :)).  HTH good luck!

By not registering I think people would really get the hint and give you cash. Also, people know that it will be a huge pain in the a$$ to bring everything home and will most likely stay away from giving gifts regardless. But if you do want to make a small registry, people could ship the items to your home. Are you having a wedding shower? If not, then you don't need to register at all.

Oh, I don't recommend doing a honeymoon registry at all. The company takes a portion of the money given to you as a fee. So if I were to put $100 into your HM registry website, you would only get like $80-$90 of it; if even that much at all. So basically if 20 people put money into it, just imagine how much you will be losing.

    Good Luck!

  • There are 2 things that might happen if you don't register at all: 1. Your guests will get the hint and give you cash, 2. They'll get you something you don't want, that could potentially be difficult to return. If you make a small registry at a store with a return policy you like (for example, Bed, Bath, and Beyond will send you a check for gift returns if you want), you are less likely to have difficulties returning things you really don't want. If people are asking you about gifts, it's ok so say you're saving for a house and that you don't need any THINGS. This is very different from telling people who haven't asked or putting it on your invites, both of which are no-nos. People really shouldn't be asking you anyway, they should be asking your BMs and your female reletive, who can spread the word that you don't want stuff, you want a house.

  • Why not do a honeymoon registry? Go through your travel agent for this and people can contribute to your honeymoon instead of getting gift cards, etc...
    This is extremely popular now.
