Can A Candy Buffet Subsitute for Cake?

Our wedding reception will have a laid-back summer feel and neither my fiance nor I care if we have a wedding cake.  We are already planning on having a Candy Buffet available to our guests throughout the reception.  So do we also need to provide a dessert after dinner?

Re: Can A Candy Buffet Subsitute for Cake?

  • Yes.  Candy is not dessert.

  • I wouldn't be pleased with a candy buffet as the dessert.  I'm not going to eat a plate of candy, and candy isn't that special.

We didn't care about a wedding cake either, so we had a dessert buffet with a variety of different options (fruit cobbler, ice cream, sorbet, smaller cakes, fondue, cookies, etc.).  Would you consider something like that?
  • I think you need to offer something more typical of a dessert.  Substituting pies, tarts, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, cheesecake, etc. for cake is becoming a lot more common, as are sundae bars and fondue fountains, but those all seem to offer the same portion size.  If you are concerned about price, cupcakes can be cheaper than cake as can cookies or you could consider having a small display wedding cake and supplementing with sheet cakes in the same flavor/frosting combo.

  • Candy is no substitute for dessert.  Like others suggested, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, ice creams.  Something.
  • You could do a chocolate fountain. We went to a wedding with one and it was a HUGE hit.
  • I would not consider candy a dessert.  I would offer something else if you don't like cake...cookies, brownies, cheesecake, chocolate fountain, ice cream, etc.  A candy buffet should act more like your favor then a dessert bar.

  • i agree that the candy alone isnt enough but if you had cookies, brownies, or chocolate fountain, etc then it would be fine.
