Is This Dress Idea Silly?

My idea is to wear a short lace dress, like this:

With a skirt like this (but instead of the belt, tying a bow around the
waist) during the ceremony, for the first dance, and the garter toss.

And taking the skirt off when the dancing gets going.

What are your thoughts on this? Is it weird, or could it be pulled off?
Thanks for your help!

Re: Is This Dress Idea Silly?

  • Do I think it is silly?  No.  But have you tried something like what you are envisioning on?  Having a cut-away skirt/train is a new trend that is being seen a lot so it can definitely be pulled off.  I would just make sure that the two items you are putting together are cohesive and work well together as a whole.

  • I don't think the material of the skirt will match well with the lace dress.
    Anniversary
  • I'm unsure about the material, too. The one pictured is chiffon (which is what my BMs will be wearing).

Maybe silk or satin would work better? Or something else?
  • I think satin would work the best.

Have you thought about speaking to a seamstress and having a skirt made to coordinate with the lace dress?  Since it isn't a whole dress and it looks like you want something on the simple side it may not cost that much.

I love the lace dress and think it would work extrememly well with what you are thinking of doing but getting the skirt to coordinate will be the difficult part.

  • You really need to try it on and see how it looks.
  • I love the top of that dress!
  • I loooove this idea. Totally different.

  • I love the idea and I love the short lace dres! The top is really cute. If you are not set on that dress, maybe check out bridal salons that have this idea of the removable skirt, that way it will coordinate perfectly
  • I would go with a tulle or satin. Another option would be to get a skirt made that is long and then flairs under the lace dress. It would look more like a mermaid dress.

  • Super fun idea. Creative and fun. I love it! I am SUPER non-traditional and going a completely different direction, but it's MY direction. I'm glad you're going yours.
  • I definitely think you should try it on all before you buy it... but I love the IDEA of it.
  • I think David's bridal still sells the bridesmaid 2-piece dresses. Maybe try that?

  • I'm doing a Dere Kiang two-piece with a cutaway skirt like that (no long sleeves), so I'm biased, but I'm all for this idea.  The skirt and the dress itself have hook-and-eye fasteners all the way around the waist to keep the skirt level.

Also, I don't know how much you're looking to spend on skirts, but BHLDN and J Crew have just put out some really, really gorgeous long, skirts that would be really different.
  • Thank you everyone for the ideas and advice! I'm looking into the option of going to a seamstress, but also still browsing online. And I'm really excited about it, so thanks for the support. :D

Satin is up there on my list right now. And I'll definitely check out all the places you listed.

    You're all the best!

This isn't silly, in fact, I've wondered why two-dress brides don't do something like this. And, I saw this same idea featured on the runway in a Youtube video for a designer show, can't remember who the designer was.

Or you could get a top that you love, and pair it with with a long skirt for the ceremony and a short skirt fo the reception. Many of those corset dresses and actually two parts, anyway.

Or, working from your first photo: the lacy top could be made as a removable jacket and you could go bar shouldered for the reception/dancing.

Gosh, we we get going, there are many mix ' match pieces to put together to change the look from a wedding to a reception.
