ENGAGEMENT PHOTO QUESTION

ok here is the situation....

I want engagement photos done but how long can we wait to do them after we have been engaged?

We are in SC and our wedding is going to be in CT which is where my photographer (when i pick one) is going to be from. We are not planning a trip up there until at least June possibly Sept...we got engaged Feb 1st.....

We could do them down here but I think the whole point of them are to get to know your photographer correct??????

Thanks
Deanna

Re: ENGAGEMENT PHOTO QUESTION

  • You can wait as long as you want.  We waited 9 months after we got engaged.  When is your wedding?  What do you plan to use the pictures for?

  • Yes, a big part of it is getting to know your photographer and being comfortable with your photographer so on the wedding day you aren't as nervous (imo).  Our photographer is actually taking us out to dinner after our engagement session.  You can plan to do them whenever you want.  We got engaged the beginning of January, getting married the end of July and we are doing ours in May/June so we have them in time for our wedding.  The timeline for photographers are all different.

But short answer to your question is yes, it is a good way to get to know your photographer.
  • The Wedding is hopefully June 15, 2013 or Sept 7, 2013...finding out this weekend about 2 venues via skype meetings while my poor mom is touring them lol

And I dont know what exactly we would be using them for other than the fact I am always taking pictures and never in any with him!!!!  lol

  • Then you can certainly wait to have them taken.  We had full rights to the pictures so we made save the date magnets with one of our pictures and sent those out.  Epics were part of our package and they will be turned into our wedding guest book.
  • I was engaged for over two years before I took engagement pictures. =) Don't worry about getting them done quickly. I would suggest you pick out a photographer after you put down a deposit on your venue. Most photography packages come with engagement sessions- like you said, they are a good way to get to know the photographer. Once you choose one, you can work out when you'll visit and get the pictures taken.
  • I agree with the PPs. You can do them whenever you want! Enjoy the time with your photographer :) good luck with the skype meetings!
  • I second Moonlight... we've been engaged for over a year now and still haven't taken them.  We just moved back from Hawaii so we had to go with our gut plus reviews and book most of our vendors via skype meetings.

I think you can get a good feel for how comfortable you feel with a photographer just by talking or skyping with them!  Definitely ask to see photos from a COMPLETE wedding as well.  My photographer even said some people don't do their "engagement" session til after they get married because they are so busy!

  • E-pics are DEFINITELY a way to become comfortable with your photographer, and you can wait however long is necessary until you do an e-pic shoot.

We got engaged Oct. 2009 and got married June 2011 and didn't hire our photographer until Sept. 2010.  We didn't schedule e-pics until November 2010 (so 13 months after our engagement, 7 months before the wedding) and April 2011 (the November weekend ended up being REALLY cold and our photographer shut it down early and gave us a 2nd shoot).

Bottom line: whatever works for your timeline!  Since you're not getting married until June 2013, if you can't get to CT until this June 1) that's really not that long of a wait and 2) you still have a year to send out Save-the-Dates if that's what you intend to do with them (so long as you hire a photographer with a fast return rate)...

    Good luck!

  • I'm getting married in June 2013, and FI and I will be moving to kentucky in June, so we actually decided w/ our schedule we're not going to do engagement photos. Yes, I think they could help you get to know your photographer, but at the same time, that's their job, they are professionals and should know how to make you feel at ease. If you still think you want to 'get to know' the photographer, then by all means do engagement photos, whenever your schedule allows. Some of my friends timed their engagement pics so they could use a few for the STD. Since you'll be long distance planning too, just go w/ what works for your schedule, there's no timeline for getting e-photos, and there's also nothing saying you have to get them if it just doesn't work out.
Good luck w/ the venue skyping! My mom and sister did the same thing when we found our venue :)

  • Ditto to the girls....I really doesn't matter when you take them time wise.

We got engaged in Feb, of 09' & did our pics in Oct, 2010. We waited mostly because we wanted foliage/fall pics for our e-pics but other than that the timing did not matter.

It definitely is a great opportunity to get to know your photographers! We had a blast!

  • We still haven't done our engagement pictures because we definitely want them to be outside, and it's just too cold now, so we'll probably do them in April or May. I know we're waiting a really long time but at least they'll be done before our wedding in October!

  • I agree with PP.  We got engaged in October 2010 and had out e-pics September 2011 and are getting married this April.  It is all with your schedule and your photographers schedule as well.  If you aren't going to be in CT much, I would try to pic a photographer soon because they may not be available when you are in CT.
