It's totally up to you guys.  The way my MOH didit I think worked best for us.  I had a list of "VIPs" that I really would be sad if they couldn't make it for the festivities and then a list of the rest of the ladies.  She emailed all 10 of the girls on the VIP list and she asked which weekend date over the next 3 months would work best for them.  The one that everyone could attend worked out!  My shower is Aug 28 and my wedding is Oct 9.  I think anywhere is the 1 week to 5-6 months out is totally acceptable.

I had mine 3 1/2 months before our wedding, Brides really aren't supposed to plan their own shower. Generally they are surprises.

My BMs did a tea Party Theme had some finger foods and tea, they had a few games we played and then I opened my gifts as my MOH created my Bow bouquet.

I find so many things these days are pretty much what ever you want.
Personally, I tend to agree that you shouldn't be planning your shower & it should be a surprise!  I can completely understand if there are little hints (like VIP's) that the bride wants the bridal party to work with.   Is there someone other than you that your sister to partner with, to figure all the detailks out?  Maybe the mothers' or other bridal party gals (if you have them) could give her ideas or suggestions so that it is one less thing you have to worry about!

One of my BM's sent me a "fake" invite to her husband's surprise 40th bday party.  I really had no clue...until we arrived at the restaurant and my FI said we were here for the Branca party, the hostess didn't know what he was talking about!  After some mysterious words/looks being exchanged between them and her excusing herself to talk to the manager, the cat was out of the bag as they led us to outside patio where everyone was waiting!  I even brought a b-day gift!  We had a great lunch and cocktails, opened gifts, chatted, had some dessert and went home after about 3-4 hrs - no games at mine LOL

I wanted to co-host a shower way ahead of the date, and I was pulled up sharp by four older women I work with, who told me clearly that HERE IN THE SOUTH, WE REALLY DO FOLLOW ETIQUETTE - and showers can only be held in the 6-week window prior to the event.  So we moved the shower date into that window.

Lots of links to articles, etc. here:
