C25K

Has anyone done this? Does it work?

I need to start another form of exercise. Riding horses alone isn't cutting it. I've def. gained some since the wedding and I've been looking into this and looks pretty decent.

I also listened to a couple of the music for the work outs and can tell where the music would help.

I've had knee and sheen issues in the past, but haven't had any recently and think if I just do a slow transition, which this seems to be one, I'll be alright.

What are your thoughts?

I've done the first 2 weeks and then lost interest a few times.  I absolutely hate running, so for it to get me to stick with it for even two weeks is pretty dang good.  I like the podcasts, I just wish I liked running.

Lots of stretching and the warm up and cool downs will help with your knee/shin.

I did it for a little while before the wedding but then got sick and had to quit and then never got back to it.  I want to start it again but it's too freaking hot outside!

If you have a Droid phone there's a free app.  It plays the cues to run and walk but you can play your own music at the same time.  I think there's something for the iphone too but not sure.

I think I've gotten past week 3 a couple of times.  I loathe running...really not my thing.  I will just stick to Zumba, Ellipitcals and the sort

I did it for a few weeks last summer. When I moved back to Raleigh I missed a week and had to repeat it. Once classes started I just kind of stopped. I'm all about instant gratification and my distance wasn't increasing fast enough for me. I just started forcing myself to run for 25 minutes and I would increase my speed a little bit each time. I think I enjoyed it more outside when I didn't really know how far I was going. When I got back to Raleigh it was just too hot to run outside so I had to do the treadmill. I think it's a good program, I just get bored really easy.

I started it in the fall of 2008. I'd never run a mile in my life & now I do at least 6 miles 3 times a week. It works for some & not for others. For me, it helped me discover a new healthy stress-relieving pastime.

I agree that it's much better to do outside than on a treadmill. I just switched to morning runs vs. after work runs because of this oppressive heat.

Good luck with whatever exercise program you find works for you!

I just finished the C25k program last month. I have always hated running but have always wanted to be able to do it.  I repeated a few of the weeks when I didn't feel like I was ready to move on. So I did the program in 11 weeks instead of 9.  It was really hard at times and I wanted to quit but I kept it up. It helped that my sister was doing it also and that we had signed up for a 5k.

I have an iphone and I downloaded an application that tells you when to walk and run and you get to use your own music. When I started the program I was having a hard time with the 60 seconds of running intervals and now I can run 35 minutes without stopping! I highly recommend the program!

Wow! This is all very encouraging ! :o)

I agree, I like running outside a lot more than treadmills. On treadmills I focus too much on the electronical part of it and loose my focus easily, plus i kind of feel like a hamster on a treadmill.

I'm excited and plan to start next week (Monday) and DH said he'll try his best to do it with me :o)

I am not planning my wedding yet, so I don't normally post but I needed to comment on this subject.

I am one week away from my graduation run of C25K. When I started on May 2, I could barely run half a block without feeling winded, cramped, and my heart pounding out of my chest. I honestly didn't think I could do this, I just wasn't a "runner".  Now I am running almost 3 miles with absolute confidence and it is amazing and empowering. I cried the day I first ran a mile without stopping (I have never done that before) and I'm sure I'll get a little teary on my grad run. Do this program, and stick to it. You will NOT regret it!

I had major trouble with my knees at first, but then I learned some stretches for runners (off YouTube) and I have never had a problem with my knees since. Stretching properly and often is the most important thing for knee problems, and be sure not to resort to a brace too early on. It's important to give a chance for the muscles around your knees to develop.
